DESCRIPTION
The University of California San Diego is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director of Athletic Performance. UC San Diego, located in La Jolla, in the San Diego Metropolitan area, enrolls over 25,000 undergraduate students and sponsors 23 varsity sports. The Director is responsible for providing leadership, management, and coordination of a multi-disciplinary sports performance team. The position is a full-time, twelve (12) month contract position with full benefits.
The Director will be an experienced practitioner who understands the high performance sport environment, with an understanding of the overall program vision to provide the highest quality integrated sports performance support service to UC San Diego student-athletes. They will have the ability to mentor and lead staff, build a successful integrated approach between sports medicine and sports performance disciplines. Develop strategic partnerships to help deliver the vision so that UC San Diego student-athletes can achieve their athletic goals.
The Director will oversee coordinated support services between the sports medicine, strength and conditioning, nutrition, sports psychology, and performance analysis disciplines. In addition, the Director will look to collaborate with university departments to further support the student-athletes with special projects and research to further solidify the department’s commitment to academic and athletic excellence. The Director supervises the management of the Alex G. Spanos Athletic Performance Center in accordance with University, conference and NCAA regulations.
A primary role of the Director is providing strategic expertise to guide the sports medicine and sports performance teams so that they can support student-athlete health and safety through national leading physical training programs and injury prevention/rehabilitation programs.
This is a comprehensive appointment that includes supervision and staffing of the Alex G. Spanos Performance Center, as well as the Barnhart Rehabilitation Center and the nutrition center. The Director coordinates and provides leadership for programming designed to collect, coordinate and analyze data and provide feedback and recommendations to the experienced staff in the varied areas to ensure performance objectives are achieved.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Expert applied and empirical knowledge of sports performance program design and implementation for strength, speed and conditioning of ground and water based athletes.
• Expert applied experience developing and implementing annual performance plans specific to the needs of a broad range of diverse intercollegiate athletic sports.
• Demonstrated significant experience implementing professional development plans for sports performance professionals.
• Expert knowledge managing and leading sports performance facilities designed for biofeedback solutions and applied rehabilitation techniques.
• Ability to follow sound accounting practices and budgeting procedures, including ability to make projections of expenses. Sufficient knowledge of financial management principles to develop and adhere to a sound program budget.
• Computer skills in programs relevant to job duties, including scheduling software and database management.
• Proven ability to convey technical information and provide guidelines in a clear and professional manner, using diplomacy, tact and discretion in all interactions.
• Proven leadership experience as evidenced by one who possesses a broad vision of the future of athletic performance with ability to present recommendations and information in a persuasive and motivational manner.
• Demonstrated supervisory and management skills, including the ability to effectively delegate responsibilities. Skill to communicate clearly and effectively to coaches, athletic administrators and student-athletes.
• Proven skill in communicating issues clearly and gathering information through appropriate research and consultation with a wide variety of constituents including sports medicine personnel, dietitians, coaches, student-athletes and athletic administrators.
• Strong oral and written communication skills to communicate and interact with persons of diverse backgrounds and personalities.
• Ability to multi-task effectively, demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making, and independently follow tasks through to completion.
• A Bachelor's Degree (Master's highly preferred) in Kinesiology, Exercise Science or a related field; or equivalent years of experience.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
• Job offer is contingent upon a satisfactory clearance based on background check results.
• A driver's license required; must participate in the DMV Pull program and maintain a clean DMV record.
• Must have and maintain First Aid and CPR/AED certifications; if not currently certified, must obtain certification prior to working with student-athletes.
