Job Summary:
The Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Creative Services is responsible for increasing the overall visibility of SMU Athletics by leading and managing marketing, promotions, and video services.
Marketing duties include, but are not limited to, development and implementation of marketing plan/strategy, social media strategy and game-day promotions/operations. Perform daily administrative duties, including assisting with the day-to-day operations. Provide oversight of the Director of Marketing, the Director of Promotions and Gameday Experience and the Director of MustangVision as well as interns.
Essential Functions:
• Marketing - Work with the Director of Marketing to design, plan, implement and manage promotional and marketing strategies to increase attendance, engagement and enhance awareness of SMU athletic events and sports programs, with a focus on football and men's and women’s basketball.
• Social Media – Create innovative & engaging social media strategies designed to generate "buzz" and grow the social media presence of the SMU brand. Direct social media strategy for teams & SMU Athletics, while collaborating with other departments to drive revenue. Oversee all social media campaigns, including concept development, activation, measurement and evaluation.
• Gameday Experience - Work with the Director of Promotions and Gameday Experience to develop and implement plans to create an entertaining atmosphere at events, to encourage spectator participation, loyalty and support, utilizing creative and trendsetting methods to create excitement before, during and after athletics events.
• Creative Services - Oversee and coordinate the efforts of marketing and video departments, creating a unified look and feel while seeking to be a leader within the industry/field.
• Video Services - Oversee the Director of MustangVision to showcase SMU departmental and student-athlete accomplishments through high-quality videos, videoboard elements, commercial spots, special event presentations, development videos and more.
• Website - Oversee the athletics department website, smumustangs.com, including managing the overall look, layout, feel, and navigation.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in Marketing and/or Communications. Master’s degree is preferred.
A minimum of five years’ of professional work experience in marketing, advertising and/or communications is required.
Prior experience managing a professional staff is also required. Prior experience working with a NCAA Division I athletic program or professional sports team is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing. A strong customer service orientation is essential.
Candidate must possess strong time management, organizational and planning skills with the ability to meet timelines with minimal supervision. Must also possess the ability to use independent judgment to organize and prioritize work and manage resources to achieve goals.
Candidate must possess strong problem solving skills with the ability to identify business problems, needs, opportunities and creatively solve them. A strong focus on attention to detail is essential.
Candidate must have a strong understanding of branding, marketing and advertising principles. The ability to develop, plan and implement marketing strategies is essential.
Candidate must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required. Understanding of NCAA rules and regulations is desirable.
