Montana State University Billings is a comprehensive public four-year higher education institution located in Montana's largest population center, whose faculty is actively engaged in teaching, research, creative endeavors and public service. MSU Billings is unique in that it is one of a select few higher education institutions that also boasts an embedded two-year community college.
The University opened in 1927 and was initially called Eastern Montana State Normal School at Billings and was established to prepare teachers for elementary schools in eastern Montana. MSU Billings has grown, with the city of Billings and Yellowstone County, into the major urban comprehensive higher education center of south central and eastern Montana. The University campus consists of four colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and the College of Allied Health Professions. Seven miles west of the University campus sits City College at MSU Billings, which serves the comprehensive two-year mission of the university.
MSUB is a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and competes at the NCAA Division II level with men’s and women’s varsity teams in basketball, soccer, cross country, golf, women’s volleyball, baseball, track & field, and softball plus co-educational cheerleading.
The Director of Athletic Development and Marketing reports to the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. This position will identify, cultivate, and solicit philanthropic support by developing & maintaining relationships with assigned prospects and donors to the University for all athletic related fundraising initiatives. Additionally, this position is responsible for the management of all corporate sponsorship sales and administration of an athletics marketing plan.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Working closely with personnel from the MSUB Foundation, the Alumni Association, etc., on development strategies and activities; soliciting annual gifts from individuals, businesses, and other organizations; researching potential funding sources, including businesses and individuals, and developing related donor prospect and volunteer files; and researching and developing proposals for various fund raising projects (soccer/fieldhouse complex site, softball stadium Phase 2, funding for a baseball practice field, etc.), and grant writing;
• Developing and presenting comprehensive, 5-year development and marketing plans for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics; implementing those plans; and making recommendations related to revising them;
• Overseeing and managing the department staff in planning, organizing, and coordinating projects and special events within the athletic program and the Yellowjacket Athletic Association (booster club), such as an annual golf tournament, a scholarship dinner auction, etc.;
• Directing, advising, and training athletics personnel in procedures impacting donor stewardship, including recording gifts accurately, acknowledging all gifts, coordinating direct mailings, and maintaining a current, accurate database;
• Planning and monitoring the development portion of the overall athletics budget;
• Promoting the athletic program and facilitating the coaches’ promotion of the athletic program by speaking to community service clubs and organizations;
• Generating feature stories and other informational items related to fund raising in Yellowjacket Athletics;
• Coordinating strategies with and oversight of MSUB co-educational cheer team, MSUB pep band, and Mascot program; • Representing the athletic program at university and community events, and serving on committees and boards as requested by the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics; and
• Fulfilling other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Athletic Director.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree
• Two or more years of successful experience in development, fund raising, marketing, and/or related field
• Leadership skills and sound business ethics and etiquette with a commitment to personal and professional excellence
• Ability to organize and lead volunteers in various fund raising activities
• Ability to develop budgets, prepare reports, and complete other writing projects in a timely and accurate manner
• Ability to identify, plan, and implement strategic development initiatives
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Strong organizational skills
• Computer experience, including word processing and database skills
• Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to motivate individuals and groups
• Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, boosters, community members, and business/industry leaders
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, public relations, communication, sport management, or a related field from an accredited college or university
• Successful experience in planning, coordinating, and conducting major capital or comprehensive campaign efforts, or the ability to acquire the training and background necessary to coordinate the department’s comprehensive campaign involving work with endowments, estate planning, tax credits, and deferred giving
• Ability to write successful grant proposals
• Knowledge of NCAA Division II athletic programs
