Job Summary and Mission
Recognized as the top IR team in its sector and #3 overall by the financial community, Starbucks is seeking a director of Investor Relations at our Seattle, WA headquarters. Reporting to the vice president, Investor Relations, this role is responsible for partnering in the development, implementation and management of a comprehensive investor relations program. This individual serves as a primary communicator with Starbucks investors, analysts and other important stakeholders and influencers in the investment community. A deep understanding of the company’s strategy, operations, and financial performance is essential to the success of this role.
This professional leads the development of key financial communications, including earnings releases and scripts, investor presentations, and news releases. Collaborating with key internal partners to effectively articulate a comprehensive and credible external story that utilizes key performance measures is critical, while also balancing appropriate level of confidentiality. This position plays a key role in setting the overall strategic tone for the financial communications of the company, and is relied upon heavily by the chief financial officer and senior leadership in this capacity. The ability to navigate a complex organization, build relationships, and work effectively under pressure are also critical success factors for this role. Another important attribute is the ability to identify areas for process improvement and effectively implement change with the intent to enhance the quality of information content and flow, strengthen analysis and reporting, and/or reduce redundancy.
Other responsibilities include setting goals for the work group, developing organizational capability, providing leadership and mentoring to the investor relations team, monitoring the overall effectiveness of investor relations programs, and contributing to the development of outreach strategies to broaden investor interest. General understanding of the investment industry, including sell-side/buy-side characteristics, valuation methodologies, and key issues that drive the market are beneficial.
Experience in retail/consumer industry with large or mega cap global company strongly preferred.
Summary of Responsibilities
Business Requirements
• Builds and maintains strong and credible relationships with the investment community and effectively articulate a comprehensive and credible external story that utilizes the company’s key messages, short- and long-term financial and operating performance, business strategies, and results of strategic initiatives. Frequently is first line of communication between the company and the investment community, including both domestic and international analysts/investors.
• Builds and maintains relationships and supports brokerage firm coverage by sellside analysts. May actively pursue new coverage by targeted firms and/or pursue coverage from analysts outside company’s primary sector to broaden coverage and valuation. Facilitates analyst discussions with chairman/ceo, cfo and senior leaders to gain understanding of strategy, direction, opportunity and results. Works directly with analysts to build their understanding of Starbucks P&L and financial models.
• Works closely with key finance, business and communications leaders within the company to develop and effectively articulate a comprehensive and credible external story utilizing financial communications, including earnings releases and scripts, investor presentations, annual meetings, biennial investor conferences and news releases to convey key messages, strategic outlook and short- and long-term financial performance metrics.
• Executes the analysis for and creation of periodic feedback reports about the company's stock price, relative stock price, brokerage analysis' estimates and the perceptions, oral perceptions and opinions from analysts and investors, industries and peer companies, and the stock market. Conveys the findings through oral presentations and/or written reports to the senior leaders and Board of Directors.
• Speaks and represents the company at investment community presentations, institutional and retail investor meetings and discussions.
• Manages the creation of publications and electronic media used in the IR program.
• Regarded as a subject matter expert in the field of Investor Relations, including communications, financial analysis, corporate disclosure, proxy solicitation, corporate governance and regulatory compliance, e.g. Reg. FD, Reg. G., NASDAQ, etc.
• Utilizes industry sources to stay connected to the Investor Relations community and current events within the industry. Identifies emerging issues and best practices in Investor Relations.
Leadership
• Interfaces regularly with Starbucks senior leadership (including the chairman/ceo, cfo, general counsel, divisional presidents and financial officers, as well as corporate and divisional communications staffs, finance leaders, internal and retained legal counsel, retained PR/IR consultants, and other staff members) to present to management the views, insights and opinions of the investment community regarding the company’s performance and strategies.
• Provides market intelligence to senior executives, including financial and industry trends, shareholder concerns and competitor’s communication and actions that might impact the Company and its positioning in the investment community.
• Provides guidance, coaching, and support to company leaders on appropriate external disclosure to the investment community with respect to the company’s strategy, successes, issues and value proposition to investors.
• Sets goals for the work group, develops finance and operational capabilities of the IR team members responsible for financial analysis, daily monitoring and reporting, and key projects.
• Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the immediate team of direct reports promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership and teamwork to achieve business results.
• Provides leadership and mentoring to the investor relations team.
• Drives and leads continuous process improvement in reporting and operations.
• Manages staff that develop and maintain the investor database, IR website, annual mailing, annual report and other projects.
Planning and Execution
• Partners with vp to develop and execute global investor relations program including strategic plans and goals, the operating plan and budget, and planning and managing IR’s resources and infrastructure.
• Collaborates with the vp in the development of outreach strategies to broaden investor interest.
• Plans and manages department processes and practices to ensure that programs are aligned with company business goals and objectives.
• Establishes and maintains processes to monitor and measure the effectiveness of the company’s investor relations efforts.
Partner Development & Team Building
• Oversees training and development of partners directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions.
• Provides coaching, direction, mentoring and leadership support to team members in order to achieve partners, business and customers results.
• Challenges and inspires team member to achieve results.
• Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews.
• Ensures partners adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements.
Summary of Experience
• Investor relations or related experience in the investment community 10 years
• Experience in the development and execution of communication strategies
• Developing, leading and managing teams
• Proven experience working with Wall Street
Basic Qualifications
• A Bachelor's degree in business or finance is required
• An MBA degree with concentration in finance would be highly advantageous, although comparable work experience is acceptable.
• 5-7 years of broad-reaching, finance-driven investor relations experience is preferred - preferably with publicly held large cap companies, in the retail or consumer sector.
