Director of Property & Store Accounting
The Director of Property & Store Accounting is a hands-on role, leading the organization’s lease, property, and related store accounting processes and is responsible for ensuring compliance with US GAAP, internal controls, and SEC requirements for assigned financial statement line items. The Director manages the team’s assigned monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes, including financial statement review, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and audit schedules. The Director provides technical expertise in complex accounting and reporting matters presented by new technical guidance, business transactions, and new business operations. The Director serves as a proactive business partner, providing timely, insightful store reporting and analysis in support of dynamic business needs. Most activities of this position are completed without management’s direct supervision or approval.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Lead and manage company-wide lease, property, and related store SG&A accounting functions, including the development and maintenance of policies, procedures, and controls to ensure accurate and timely monthly financial reporting for store locations
• Monitor departmental processes against industry best practices, perform appropriate benchmarking, implement continuous process improvements and identify/implement productivity and control enhancements
• Key role in the evaluation and implementation of new lease accounting guidance (ASC 842)
• Manage team’s routine closing activities, including internal management reporting and analysis as well as external reporting data in support of inputs to SEC filings
• Develop, maintain, and execute against team’s internal accounting and reporting calendar
• Execute assigned internal control activities, providing a deficiency-free function
• Provide robust reporting and analysis
• Provide business partnership with store operations relative to store P&L questions and analysis
• Serve as subject matter expert relative to store accounting systems and related general ledger accounts
• Liaise with external auditor
• Prepare and deliver effective presentations to contribute to business initiatives
• Ensure team development; build skill sets and ensure adequate cross-training and continued growth
• Identify and champion improvements in the quality and timeliness of reported data
Supervisory Responsibilities:
• Six direct reports
• Indirect cross-functional leadership scope spanning operations
Qualifications:
• Strong proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
• Retail accounting system/POS knowledge
• Large ERP/financial system proficiency
• Strong business partner
• Proven leadership and cross-functional teamwork skills
• Thrives in a fast-paced, multi-tasking, deadline-driven, dynamic business environment
• High degree of integrity and professionalism
• Analytically oriented
• Ability to effectively communicate in both verbal and written form with all levels of management, both financial and operational
• Project management, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
• Highly motivated individual and self-starter who takes ownership of projects and tasks
Education and/or Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
• 7+ years professional experience in retail accounting and related internal controls
• 4+ years in a supervisory role
• Retail / multi-unit industry accounting experience required
• Public company experience preferred, with a working knowledge of SEC filing preparation; some financial reporting experience preferred
• Strong understanding of US GAAP pertaining to leases, capital assets, and general expenses
• Retail accounting systems expertise, including requirements definition, implementation, and maintenance of automated systems, including interfaces to general ledger
Certifications or Licenses:
• CPA license preferred
