Under the direction of the Executive Vice President, U-Haul International, Inc., plan, organize, direct, integrate, evaluate and administer all Human Resources (HR) functions including Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS), compensation, benefits, staffing employment, Employee Relations and unemployment. Develop, implement and monitor plans and objectives focused on achieving short- and long-term goals of the company. Develop and communicate strategies to U-Haul field management to combat union organizing activities. Provide counsel on employee relations matters, and assist corporate legal counsel in negotiating settlements on employee-related legal matters. Ensure compliance with all Federal and State regulations pertaining to all functional areas (i.e. Wage and Hour Division, EEOC, etc.) Evaluate the performance of subordinate managers.
Primary Responsibilities Include but are not Limited to:

• Develop and implement plans focused on achieving short- and long-term goals of the company.
• Monitor developments in areas of responsibility, analysis of proposed state and federal law, regulations, and court decisions for their impact on company practices and operations; recommends and implements policy and procedure changes consistent with requirements.
• Directs or conducts research and analysis of human resources, employee relations and training needs; recommends appropriates actions and implements programs.
• Develop and communicate strategies to U-Haul field management to combat union organizing activities.
• Counsel and direct senior management, company presidents and managers to ensure their understanding on union organization drives and avoidance of unfair labor practices.
• Provide counsel to subordinates ensuring compliance with Federal and State regulations.
• Propose, develop and implement policies and procedures regarding the corporation’s compensation plan.
• Direct the administration of U-Haul benefit programs as well as implementation of new programs (including medical and all retirement plans).
• Ensure compliance with and enforcement of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) regulations as they pertain to all retirement plans.
• Monitor litigation or administrative proceedings involving AMERCO employees.
• Consult with corporate Legal staff to effectively conclude lawsuits alleging wrongful termination, discrimination charges, wage and hour complaints and Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) compliance issues.
• Authorize any settlements necessary to successfully conclude litigation issues.
• Direct staffing effort to ensure hiring of necessary people with requisite skills.
• Provide counsel regarding employment practices, recruitment and selection of personnel and training policies.
• Provide guidance to Employee Relations personnel engaged in developing and establishing EEO policies and procedures.
• Solicit ideas and input from department managers and subordinates regarding new HR programs. Collaborates with other executives in designing, proposing and implementing new HR policies needed to enhance management and employee performance.
• Stay abreast of advances in technology and incorporate in Human Resource programs and procedures.
• Evaluate the performance, effectiveness and growth of subordinate managers and through them, all department personnel. Initiate salary increases, promotions and disciplinary action up to and including termination.
Other Duties Performed Occasionally or Infrequently:
• Engage in public relations activities such as representing the corporations before community groups, professional societies, etc.
Education / Training Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or Business Administration with a major in Industrial Relations or the equivalent in experience.
Experience:
• 10-12 years experience gained through increasingly responsible management positions where communication with several levels of employees and management were required with regard to company policies and procedures.
