POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under the direction of the Vice President of Manufacturing, this position provides strategic planning and overall oversight to the Region for the areas of Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE). This position will represent the Americas in Global SHE governance and lead the region in the application of the comprehensive program. This will include development of processes (training, auditing, change management) to ensure on the job safety and health & wellbeing of employees, risk management and prevention, environmental compliance and sustainability. This position requires up to 25% travel. Additionally, this position provides coaching and leadership to facility Safety, Health and Environmental Managers to ensure application of safe practices, hazard prevention processes, National (Country) and local regulations, adherence to recognized industry codes, and workers’ compensation claims management. Acts as an internal consultant to other regions and Corporate on matters of safety, industrial hygiene, fire, chemical management, environmental compliance, and worker’s compensation. In support of Purpose Led Performance develops the strategic and tactical sustainability program for the region. Finally, this position works closely with the McCormick Health and Wellness Organization to ensure that Health and Wellness programs are reapplied across the Supply Chain, as well as identifying the unique requirements of the local Plant environments.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develops regional strategy and oversees uniform, coordinated implementation of Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) policies and global designed management standards with focus on improving both leading and lagging KPI's. These include but are not limited to Total Incident Rate (TIR), Behavior Based Observations (BBO’s), Notice of Violations (NOV), and Annual Heath Assessment completion. Provides recommendations and action plans to address key areas of need, shifting priorities accordingly based on trends and future plans.
• Develops regional environmental strategy and provides direction to regional environmental personnel, operating unit and plant personnel responsible for SHE activities and programs to ensure uniform, coordinated compliance and risk management. Additionally, develops strategic regional plans and manages execution of sustainability programs.
• Manages SHE risk on complex liability issues such as conducting due diligence for potential acquisitions and managing legacy issues from previous divestitures. Leads SHE review efforts for new product and process development, facility modification, product manufacturing modifications and new equipment/machinery installations.
• Audits processes and programs for conformance to national, regional and local SHE regulations and company standards.
• Provides technical Subject Matter Expert support to global operations on SHE issues. Responds to third party requests for information.
• Leads the resolution of escalated Worker's Compensation issues throughout the Americas with emphasis on implementing cost control measures and proper case management. Primary Liaison with insurance carriers, for Liability and Worker's Compensation coverage. Co-ordinates case management issues with risk management and with outside legal and medical contacts.
• Works in partnership with the Corporate Health and Well Being organization to develop and deploy Health and Wellness programs across the Supply Chain.
• Develops relationships with appropriate regulatory agencies and non-government organizations, as well as the appropriate internal organizations and individuals in order to successfully implement all SHE programs in the region.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• 4-year college/university degree preferred. Bachelor of Science; Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene or Engineering desired.
• 10+ years safety experience with 3-5 years management experience.
• Plant safety experience or experience managing safety for multiple locations.
• Knowledge and understanding of OSHA (and other country equivalent agencies) objectives/intentions and local State safety regulations required.
• Knowledge and understanding of environmental regulations also required, with experience leading environmental work preferred.
• Demonstrated history of strategic leadership and broad-based thinking balancing effective controls with a vision of future needs for a growing corporation.
• Demonstrated ability to obtain senior management consensus on agenda and objectives.
• Demonstrated history of effectively coordinating conflicting priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
• The ability to work regionally regularly and globally as needed, taking into account the geographic differences in cultures and work practices.
• Strong negotiation and problem-solving skills.
• Technical knowledge of manufacturing facilities and associated SHE control systems.
• Strong communication and diplomacy skills are required to guide and influence others.
• Leadership of non-direct reports to achieve common objectives. May interface with external parties as representative of the company.
• Strong cross-functional strategic leadership, communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to translate strategy into actionable information in small or large groups in a clear, concise and professional manner.
• Ability to influence upwards and engage shop floor employees.
