Job Summary:The Vice President, Merchandising (“VP-Mdse”) plays a primary role in evolving merchandising and product sourcing strategies that deliver long term growth and enhance the company’s brand equity, strategic positioning, revenue, profit, and ultimately, market value.
Leading the category management team, the VP-Mdse oversees product innovation and assortment, promotional planning, pricing strategies, and placement. The VP-Mdse is responsible for ensuring product trends are reflected in assortments, end-to-end product life cycles are defined and planned appropriately, and item/category profitability is maximized through effective product costs, sound pricing and promotional structure, and reasonable product clearance cadence.
As part of the merchandising strategy, the VP-Mdse leads and ensures the translation of product/category strategies into sourcing strategies that meet product supply continuity, sales, margin, legal and regulatory compliance, quality, and social responsibility objectives. Through the global sourcing team, the VP-Mdse ensures appropriate evaluation and determination of supplier capabilities and viability, establishing and leveraging supplier relations, and negotiates sourcing contracts with suppliers.

Primary Functions:
• Lead development of product strategy. Enhance the current category management process, including pricing models, sku rationalization, distribution network and merchandising systems.
• Drive innovation and newness in product categories and product assortments, including visual presentation, grounded in customer segmentation insights.
• Influence the execution of product & service strategy, including sourcing, compliance, assorting, and pricing that is grounded in fact-based decision making.
• Drive customer acquisition and retention strategies and tactics, including product and promotional planning.
• Develop merchandising programs that simplify and enhance the customer experience.
• Deliver growth and profit objectives by developing executable plans and programs that support the business strategies and drives sales.
• Leads the development and implementation of the sourcing strategy that aligns to the category management product vision; and improves/builds strong supplier base to ensure continuity of supply in alignment with Company business objectives and values, and emerging product needs.
• Direct and lead supplier analysis, the evaluation of potential suppliers, and management of the overall supplier qualification process against Company sourcing, legal and regulatory compliance, quality, sustainability, and social responsibility requirements and standards.
• Explore and cultivate new supplier relationships related to products and product development.
• Partner/collaborate with Compliance and Quality department to identify, develop and implement process improvements that optimize supplier and internal performance
• Manage the supply risk by determining when additional or alternate sources are required, and implementing proactive strategies to minimize product flow disruptions.
• Supports and helps lead change in the organization while fostering a culture that drives for results and equally focuses on compliance, product, service and execution.
• Provide strong leadership in the recruitment, training and development of top quality talent to ensure the team has a high level of performance, productivity, accountability, and transparency.
• Ensures products and suppliers are in legal compliance, specifically with the Lacey Act and/or CARB; and in addition, holds suppliers to strict standards of ethical and legal behaviors and conducts appropriate due diligence that they are in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
• Holds employees accountable to conduct business and behave in an ethical manner and in compliance with company policy as well as all applicable laws and regulations; ensures applicable training is provided.
• Fosters and ensures compliance with company policy and applicable laws and regulations relating to all facets of the business, including, but not limited to SOX, SEC, Lacey Act, FCPA, and C-TPAT, wage and hour, product safety, certifications and labelling, environmental, and social responsibility.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Strong operational background and experience in the development of broad-based and all-encompassing merchandising and sourcing strategies that drive growth, leverage new business opportunities, and improve profitability.
• A well-grounded understanding of a multi-unit and multi-state business model.
• Strong track record of building strategic partnerships and relationships.
• Experience helping lead an organization through change is preferred, including direct experience with operating initiatives and programs that build growth and profitability.
• Experience in attracting and retaining high caliber talent and developing a world-class team.
Education & Experience
• Bachelor degree required in business or related field; advanced degree preferred.
• 7-10 years of professional experience in increasingly senior merchandising role, preferably in a multi-unit retail organization.
