The Director, Digital Merchandise is responsible for developing and implementing the online merchandising concepts, promotional strategies, merchandise assortments, and product presentations which enhance the customer on-line experience to achieve sales and margin objectives. This role requires daily collaboration with all levels of partners (C suite, EVPs, VPs, to team level) in Merchandising, Marketing, Creative, Planning, Sales Promotion, Operations, and the Technical team. The Director, Digital Merchandise develops and leads a team of Digital Merchandise Managers.
• Overall ownership of the digital store sales and margin goals for a merchandising family of business.
• Accountable to grow total company sales and profit through an effective, customer centric web site.
• Communicates and strategize performances to plan and LY to the Executive Team, GMMs, and DMMs.
• Works with Web Analytics and User Experience Architect to monitor business performance and customer feedback, analyze categories, promotional gels, and web related content. Develops strategy and takes appropriate actions including the taxonomy, navigation, search, promotional pages, and product detail pages.
• Leads strategic assortment planning and marketing strategy with GMMs and DMMs identifying vendors, categories and items for the web store. Partners with vendors as needed. Identifies drop ship opportunities.
• Drives the Demand Center sales planning process by season to maximize opportunities, grow the business in conjunction with the overall Belk business plan and react to trend opportunities.
• In season, follows-up on digital merchandise needs.
• Performs competitive site analysis to strengthen the next season’s strategy.
• Leads the development of online promotional strategies, product presentations and links to support overall branding objectives and marketing campaigns.
• Collaborates directly with Marketing, Merchandising, Sales Promotion, and Planning departments to position key selling themes, trends, offers and promotions consistent with the Belk stores and branding efforts.
• Directs and conducts regular competitive analyses to identify best practices and recommended action items.
• In conjunction with the GMM and DMM, maintains strong relationships with key vendor partners to build the web business.
• Works with Drop Ship Manager to ensure set up and flow of all drop ship vendors and merchandise.
• Leads discussions with the DMMs and Buyers to get products through the creative process and to enhance product content through attributes, copy, videos, and images.
• Works closely with Product Managers to ensure effective development, brand marketing, and execution of private brand products consistent with merchandise direction, trends and key items.
• Identifies strategies and opportunities with the Email Marketing, Social Marketing, and Online Marketing.
• Works with the Web Operations team to quickly resolve customer issues.
• Works with Web Analytics to identify customer trends & opportunities to improve site performance.
• Works with Fulfillment Center to resolve any issues on timely basis and expedite merchandise as needed.
• Works with IT Team to report site and workflow tool issues.
• Partners with the User Experience Architect on future ideas and strategies, to continually improve sales, user experience and site optimization.
Minimum Education & Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Retail or related concentration required.
• Strong recent experience in online merchandising.
• 10 or more years of online Retail Merchandising experience (buying, planning/allocation experience a must; marketing experience a plus.)
• Minimum of 5 years managing direct reports.
• Solid project management and vendor management expertise.
Knowledge / Skills Requirements:
• Proficiency in web business-related computer software (Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Power Point, Endeca, Adobe or other web analytic software package, etc.)
