JOB TITLE: AREA FIELD MANAGER
COMPANY: U-HAUL MARKETING COMPANIES (U.S.)
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Marketing Company President (MCP), perform a variety of duties necessary to effectively service the equipment, the premises and the dealer in the assigned route. Provide rental equipment, supplies and instructions necessary to profitably operate a dealership. Achieve optimum dealer productivity while meeting minimum active dealer standards. Ensure that not one unproductive dealer is allowed to retain the privilege of representing U-Haul. Note: Essential duties are not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle.
2. Develop relationships with business owners within established routes.
3. Prospect and open new dealerships, providing necessary equipment, contracts and promotional materials. Provide new dealers with detailed instructions, goals and recommendations regarding operations, reporting procedures, income, etc. Research and answer Dealer questions.
4. Utilize Dealer Service Report to plan strategies, procedures and monitor dealer phone skills to achieve optimum dealer productivity. Audit dealer rental records, including contracts and Monday Reports, to ensure complete and accurate accounting.
5. Resolve problems such as non-sufficient funds (NSF) checks, invalid credit card payments, etc.
6. Arrange for recovery of abandoned equipment, and ensure necessary repairs are made prior to returning it to active service.
7. Manage and maintain U-Haul rental equipment located at independent U-Haul Dealers such as: replacing light lenses, bulbs and reflectors, replacing coupler parts, repairing and replacing safety chains, repairing and replacing wiring, decal repair and paint touch-up, restapling or replacing webbing, roof repair, caulking, replacing wheels and tires, fixing bent or dented fenders on all rental equipment.
8. Safety certify U-Haul rental equipment located at independent U-Haul dealers.
9. Maintain an adequate stock of parts and supplies to properly service dealers. Ensure service rig is maintained and in top mechanical condition and that it projects the proper U-Haul image.
10. Report on dealership locations visited, accidents investigated, etc.
11. Maintain knowledge of local zoning regulations, restrictions and pending legislation and/or ordinances that could hinder or prohibit normal dealer operations in specific or general locations within municipalities. Apprise MCP of changes and proposed restrictions and recommend alternative proposals or methods to work with and around such pending zoning ordinance changes.
12. Must complete a minimum of one DSR every 90 days on each dealer in the route.
TOOLS/SKILLS/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Managerial, time management and organizational skills; interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively (written and verbally); basic computer skills. Position requires the ability to concentrate, take initiative, cope with stress, adapt to and stay alert in a business environment, and to use independent judgment to accomplish results. Position requires extensive traveling in service vehicle.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Balancing, carrying, climbing, color vision, depth perception, digital dexterity, feeling, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting (min. 50 lbs. assisted or unassisted), pulling, pushing, reaching, seeing, standing, stooping, turning, walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts or machines, fumes or irritant chemicals. May be required to use protective clothing, or gear such as masks, goggles, gloves or shields.
OTHER: Position requires a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record to operate motor vehicles with both types of transmission (automatic or standard). Adhere to all local vehicular regulations while driving. Position requires the ability to maintain good housekeeping practices in the work area and comply with all safety rules and procedures. It is mandatory that all accidents and injuries be reported immediately to supervisor. Must maintain just-in-time production methods, along with total quality control at the source of the work being performed. Must read company publications such as “U-Haul News”; U-Haul Technical newsletters, and other publications provided by supervisor to understand U-Haul’s Primary Service Objective (to provide better and better product and service to more and more people at a lower and lower cost.) Must use integrity and discretion in safeguarding confidential data handled or obtained in the normal performance of duties. Perform other related duties as required or assigned including to assist in the recovery of lost or stolen U-Haul property and equipment.
