Job Description
Director of Inventory Accounting
Director of Inventory Accounting is a hands-on role, leading the organization’s inventory accounting, including distribution costs, and is the business owner responsible for the integrity of the Stock Ledger and related systems and processes. Responsible for ensuring compliance with US GAAP and SEC requirements related to merchandise inventories and cost of sales. The Director manages assigned monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes and control activities, including financial statement review, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and audit schedules. The Director provides technical accounting expertise in inventory valuation, reporting, and control matters, including the evaluation and implementation of procedures for new inventory-related technical guidance, business transactions, and new business operations. The Director serves as a proactive business partner, providing timely, insightful analysis in support of dynamic business needs. Most activities of this position are completed without management’s direct supervision or approval.
Additional responsibilities include:
• Lead and manage company-wide inventory accounting, including the development and maintenance of policies, procedures, and controls to ensure accurate and timely monthly management reporting for retail and distribution center locations
• Continuously monitor departmental processes against industry best practices, perform appropriate benchmarking, implement process improvements and identify/implement productivity and control enhancements
• Manage routine closing activities, including internal management reporting and analysis as well as external reporting data compilation and validation in support of SEC filings
• Execute internal control activities, providing a deficiency-free function
• Coordinate with Operations, IT, Loss Prevention, and Inventory Control, to support and execute related controls and analyze results
• Provide robust inventory and gross margin reporting and analysis
• Ensure accuracy of Stock Ledger and perpetual records
• Reconcile, analyze and maintain rates utilized in inventory accounting processes
• Serve as subject matter expert relative to inventory accounting systems, and inventory-related general ledger accounts
• Prepare and deliver presentations to contribute to business initiatives
• Ensure team development; build skill sets and ensure adequate cross training, efficient deployment of resources and continued growth
• Identify and champion improvements in the quality of reported data
Qualified candidates will possess:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting required
• CPA preferred
• 7-10+ year’s experience in inventory accounting
• 4+ years in a leadership role, including professional staff supervision and development
• Retail / multi-unit industry inventory experience required
• Knowledge of the Retail Inventory Method
• Public company experience preferred
• Strong understanding of US GAAP pertaining to sales, inventory, and gross profit components
• Inventory systems expertise, including requirements definition, implementation, and maintenance of automated systems including interfaces to general ledger as well as a working knowledge of 3-way match software, practices, and procedures
