The Director of Business Development reports into the Vice President of Business Development and is responsible for the oversight and growth of our LOCAL initiatives, including: LOCAL retail, LOCAL online and LOCAL Experiences.
This is a critical role for the company which oversees one of the most important differentiators of the brand that drives brand awareness and customer acquisition and loyalty.
Key responsibilities include directing future local related growth initiatives and the evaluation and drive of the assortment strategy, with consideration of key analyses.
The Director should be comfortable driving impact across all customer-facing platforms -- creatively and strategically leveraging our LOCAL work. They are a combination of a strong Merchant, creative Marketer and intrapreneur who loves the process of scaling new business opportunities.
This role will develop merchandising business strategies, work directly with the makers represented in the best of LOCAL collection online and work cross functionally to identify new growth opportunities and manage information across functions (Design, Inventory Management, Sourcing, Visual) to maximize the reach of LOCAL.
Essential Functions:
• Identify the strategic direction for the division. Communicate the vision and inspire team to develop business plans and identify new opportunities. Implement tactical plans derived from strategy by working across functional areas.
• Develop and manage the west elm LOCAL online collection.
• For your departments (LOCAL Retail, LOCAL online and LOCAL Experiences) develop strategic plans to explore new business opportunities and brand awareness opportunities.
• Oversee the Open to Buy for LOCAL RTL, DTC and the + P&L for LOCAL Experiences.
• Work closely with cross functional partners to ensure that LOCAL is fully leveraged across channels.
• Develop staffing and succession plans. Interview candidates and approve final candidates.
• Determine work load for staff; recommend effective processes and procedures to improve workflow and results.
• Provide direction and clarify objectives. Evaluate and appraise performance.
• Mentor, educate and develop staff.
• Lead and facilitate meetings for your departments across functions and distribution channels.
• Participate in key company strategic initiatives and steering committees.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications:
• BA required.
• Buying/Merchandising with 8-10 years' experience.
• People management experience required.
• Marketing and story-telling experience.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Demonstrated entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial track record.
• Experience working with small creative businesses ideal + P&L
