Job Summary and Mission:
Starbucks continues to offer the largest and most robust mobile ecosystem of any retailer in the world, with more than 13.5 million Starbucks Rewards members, eight million mobile paying customers, with one out of three now using Mobile Order & Pay, and more than $6 billion loaded onto prepaid Starbucks Cards in North America during 2016 alone. But that’s still only a small percentage of our monthly customers in the US and around the world. Come join the team that is building out our new performant, multi-tenant cloud commerce engine that will be used by hundreds of millions of customers and partners across hundreds of thousands of stores, spanning over 75 countries. In this role, you will lead an Engineering organization that will design, develop and deliver the technology that enables this growth.
The unified commerce platform (UCP) is our first multi-tenant cloud commerce engine, supporting company owned stores and equity partners around the world, and enabling us to take our Loyalty, Mobile Ordering and Payment digital experiences to the next level. Built on a next-generation architecture, UCP will enable faster go-to-market for new digital capabilities and be a key enabler in delivering a simplified global technology architecture.
Summary of Key Responsibilities:
• Provide technical leadership and direction for UCP engineering
• Responsible for the full lifecycle of UCP, through vision, definition, planning, execution, deployment and sustainment
• Partner with Product Management to build the technology strategy and roadmap for the platform
• Use your knowledge of the state of technology to inform the technical design, development and standards across the software platform
• Work with senior leadership to identify new technologies and techniques that can improve our overall platform performance and ultimate customer experience
• Drive consistency, reliability, supportability and observability across our services
• Lead and follow. Use instincts and effective communication to pull people together and enable them to find solutions to challenges they encounter.
• Hire, manage and grow a team of software engineers
• Have a keen sense for product tradeoffs and delivering simple and intuitive products that just work
• Drive healthy relationships with diverse teams spanning all organizational levels
• Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks mission and values.
Required Skills & Experience:
• 10+ years of experience delivering commercial cloud and backend software products and services at enterprise to internet scale
• 5+ years building and leading teams of software engineers
• Strong working knowledge of SQL and No-SQL Platforms. Experience with Cassandra preferred
• Extensive development experience with Java, Object-Oriented Programming, Scala and/or Functional Programming is a plus
• Strong working knowledge of Reactive application development tools and relevant technologies such as Akka, Spring Boot, CQRS, event sourcing, Kafka, Spark
• Be an expert at delivering micro-services into a distributed systems architecture
• Skilled at agile-based development, having experience with at least scrum and ideally Kanban or other agile methodology
• Experience working in a DevSecOps or DevOps culture
• Exceptional communication and presentation skills: you can communicate conceptual ideas, engineering rationale and technical challenges both verbally and visually, to a range of audiences
• Experience working with distributed teams
• Experience developing digital retail products, technologies and platforms is strongly desired
• BA/BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical field is strongly preferred, a Master’s degree is a bonus
