The Director of Corporate Strategy plays a critical role in defining and envisioning our strategy. The primary responsibility is to deliver our strategic plan – in a clear, data-driven, actionable way that positions CarMax for long-term market leadership. In doing this, the Director of Corporate Strategy will work closely with top executives across the company. To be successful this person will need to have a deep understanding of broad industry and competitive dynamics, consumer trends, regulatory impacts, as well as CarMax’s competitive advantages.
This position provides a strategic thinker – possessing strong analytical and management skills – the opportunity to play a leadership role in driving the strategy that will shape the future of a Fortune 500 retailer.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific responsibilities for the role include:
1. Leading a team responsible for monitoring internal and external performance, developing annual strategic plan, supporting key initiatives and identifying near-term performance improvement opportunities
2. Lead ongoing cross-functional effort to define/develop and enhance corporate strategic direction and corporate prioritization
a. Facilitate the strategic planning process to establish company goals, define key strategies, & launch strategic initiatives
b. Continually assess corporate strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats and promote actionable proposals to address them
c. Identify new organizational capabilities necessary to sustain long-term competitive advantage and growth
d. Track progress against Strategic Plan goals and guide the process to evolve plans as appropriate
e. Work with department heads to align their roadmaps with the Strategic Plan
3. Continually work with the Change Leadership Team to prioritize the most important change projects
4. Assist the implementation of Strategic Initiatives by providing strategic support on key decisions and facilitating cross-functional alignment
5. Work closely with the SVP of Strategy & Business Transformation to maintain a communications strategy to inform all executives on results from strategic initiatives as well as overall business performance
6. In partnership with the Director of Corporate Strategy provide Strategic Plan updates to the Senior Team & Board
7. Lead the enterprise-wide risk management process
Position Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:

• Exceptional problem solving skills – quantitative, analytical, and strategic
• Proven track record for delivering results
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
• MBA / Masters degree or demonstrable equivalent experience
• 3 – 5 years post-MBA with top tier consultancy or Fortune 500 corporate strategy function
• Proven success in strategic planning
• Experience influencing across a large organization at all levels
• Experience working effectively with senior management, particularly with a record of success at selling new ideas
• Relevant experience in a growth retailer
• Experience managing highly analytical projects and people
