The individual who holds this position advances the American Cancer Society’s mission, goals and objectives by leading the development and implementation of a comprehensive media relations program that delivers measurable results and impact toward business objectives.
Advances the American Cancer Society mission and helps achieve measurable business objectives through the following:
• Develops and directs the organization's nationwide media relations program that is fully integrated with operational business plans and marketing and development plans.
• Directs a team that plans, develops and executes national earned media relations strategies and tactics.
• Develops strategy and directly executes media relations tactics for the highest level organizational initiatives.
• Serves as the organizational media spokesperson.
• Conducts media training and coaching for top executives; develops and implements an organization-wide media training program.
• Develops and maintains relationships with top-tier national reporters.
• Protects the reputation of the American Cancer Society in the media.
• Provides effective issues management and crisis communications on issues in the media or that could be issues in the media.
• Maintains the necessary assets to ensure an effective media relations program, including the online press room and an inventory of media materials.
• Continuously innovates the media relations program, including use of online, social media, new media and emerging platforms and techniques.
• Creates and maintains appropriate policies and procedures to ensure an effective media relations program.
• Stays abreast and knowledgeable about the evolving field of media and media relations.
• Demonstrates measurable results and impact toward business objectives through relevant metrics and reporting.
• Additional responsibilities include representing communications on interdisciplinary teams and with vendors, external partners, etc.; participating in Society events and activities; and handling other duties as assigned.
