Position OverviewThe Managing Director of Impact (MDI) reports directly to the Executive Director (ED) and will play a crucial role on the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) of City Year San José/Silicon Valley. The MDI is responsible for deepening the impact of the service model for 9,000 students in 14 schools, while also managing district and school relationships. The MDI leads the development and implementation of the site’s service and AmeriCorps member (ACM) development strategies, building district engagement and providing the tools and resources required for the site’s Impact team. The MDI also ensures that our program delivers high quality Whole School, Whole Child (WSWC) services and develops AmeriCorps members’ leadership skills to help drive student and school achievement. The MDI oversees a department of over 30 people with three director-level and one coordinator-level direct reports.
Responsibilities
Site Impact Management
• Work with site leadership to create a two to three-year partnership-development and service-implementation plan that defines the Impact Department’s priorities
• Determine district alignment with program priorities and site conditions for success within schools served
• Work with Impact and Development departments to align goals on program impact with funders
• Refine and define roles and responsibilities for the Impact team
• Define the team processes that prescribe how Learning and Development, Evaluation, and the site Impact team will work together as a “learning team” to continually use data to reach site goals
• Build strong, cohesive, whole-site culture that reflects the mission, vision, and values of City Year San José/Silicon Valley
District Engagement (DE) & School Partnerships
• Work with ED, other site leaders, and Headquarters (HQ) to develop DE goals and create a district-engagement strategic plan
• Manage Superintendent cabinet relationships with ED
• Oversee CY-District data-sharing agreement
• Schoolhouse Level – MDI is ultimately accountable for local execution of the School Partnership Process, and effective management of CY school relationships
• With directors, use HQ protocols/tools to design and implement the site’s overall school-partnership strategy
• Ensure Impact Directors and Impact Managers have the coaching and resources required to build effective school relationships
• With Senior Impact Director, engage schools directly via regular communication and monitoring of student progress
• Conduct school visits at least quarterly, including use of “walk-through” observation and coaching protocol with principals/liaisons
• Manage schoolhouse challenges that are escalated
• Manage CY brand with education stakeholders
• Adapt the model where necessary to meet changing conditions and needs
Program Implementation
• Oversee the development and implementation of program goals, ACM deployment, and Impact-staffing plans
• Ensure Impact team has necessary tools and resources to build capability in the following areas:
◦ Implementation of WSWC services
◦ Observation and coaching practice
◦ Student Progress monitoring
• Oversee local process to establish school-safety plans to ensure all student and ACM safety protocols are in place and consistently practiced; with Impact team and site leadership, manage resolution of student/corps-safety issues
ACM and Staff
• In partnership with the People & Ops team, identify, hire, and develop high-performing staff.
• Support corps and staff learning and professional development through individual and group coaching and by modeling outstanding professionalism, strong application of the City Year values, and effective leadership
• Use performance-management process to coach team members to meet individual development and performance goals
• Collaborate with L&D and Evaluation Director on determining an ACM-learning strategy that is aligned with the HQ curriculum and builds the site’s capacity to maximize impact while developing ACM’s leadership skills
• Lead on sustaining a strong sense of CY culture and values, consistently using City Year culture tools; make meaning of City Year culture and foster strong personal connections to the deeper meaning of staff/corps work
Compliance with Government and Grant Obligations
• Ensure Impact staff achieves AmeriCorps compliance goals
• Progress monitor towards AmeriCorps goals (if breakdown is different from site goal).
• Complete site progress-monitoring reports
• Oversee communication and relationship-development with state commission.
• Oversee process for site yearly audit
• Work with HQ on background-check compliance, e-grant enrollments/exits compliance, and other state requirements
Basic Qualifications
: A minimum of 7-10 years of progressive senior leadership experience, with a positive track record of role-modeling the following competencies:
Relationship Development:
• Strategically directs critical relationships to advance City Year’s mission; enables and supports City Year members and partners in their efforts to build strategic relationships by making connections and removing obstacles.
Leadership:
• Ability to work autonomously and lead powerfully in team environments; ability to develop staff members to reach their potential; previous experience managing large operations required; ability to mobilize large or small groups into action to promote change; exhibits knowledge and understanding of the principles and processes required for strategic planning and execution within an education nonprofit; understands the organizational realities of working within a public-school environment; exhibits a high level of accountability, project and task execution, and personal responsibility; ability to relate with and inspire 18 to 24-year-olds; believes in youth as agents of social change.
Communication:
• Strong verbal and written communication skills; strong presentation skills supported by fact-based best practices and analysis; ability to lead teams to produce well-articulated improvements and results; ability to disseminate required information, reports, and project status upon request; exhibits a high level of integrity and communicates across the organization effectively, openly, and with respect.
Project Management:
• Background in program development and implementation; knowledge of business-planning principles, practices, techniques, and tools; manages multiple tasks, priorities and stakeholders effectively; provides appropriate status reports and is proactive in advising executive leadership, including the Executive Director, Board of Directors and leadership of City Year; ability to build a team that generates results and completes projects within deadlines, and has a strong attention to detail.
Strategic Problem-Solving:
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills; demonstrates consistent, sound judgment and decision-making; ability to identify potential problems, analyze issues, and extrapolate appropriate solutions; provides proactive and strategic solutions and can execute on those decisions.
Evaluation:
• Exhibits clear understanding of the principles and tools of evaluation; successfully leads Impact staff toward a culture of evaluation and data-driven decision-making.
Education Requirement:
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred (M.A. in Education, M.A. in Public Policy, Non-Profit Management or M.B.A.).
