Writer, Flagship Newsletter
We’re looking for a stylish, precise, imaginative writer to help us reinvent the flagship daily newsletter of The Atlantic.
Founded in 1857, the magazine is undergoing a major expansion of its newsroom, digital product offerings, and journalistic ambitions. The daily newsletter is a signature expression of our work and a crucial point of contact between journalists at The Atlantic and the people we serve.
The person we hire will be responsible for original writing and newsletter production five days a week. But first, this person will work with editors, designers, developers and others to build, test, and refine a new, obsessively reader-focused model of the newsletter currently known as The Atlantic Daily.
To be considered, you should be an avid consumer of email newsletters and a believer in their power to connect readers with The Atlantic. You should be an enthusiast of digital audiences — understanding, recruiting, and engaging them over time. And you should bring the journalistic judgment and curiosity to tell important stories in ways that make them indispensable to our readers, current and future.
In this role, you will:
• Work daily with other journalists across The Atlantic to come up with ideas for — and help you write — five weekly editions of the newsletter.
• Interact with readers personally, in ways that build relationships with them and directly shape the form and content of the newsletter.
• Feed lessons from the build-test-learn cycle of this flagship product back into improving and inventing other email offerings.
• Be the foremost expert on this audience and understand how it relates to, and can help us grow and engage, The Atlantic’s audience as a whole.
• Help train others in the production and sending of email newsletters, and on best practices, as needed.
This role is based in Washington, D.C.
Atlantic Media Values
Across Atlantic Media, generally, the firm looks for two “pillar gifts” in you, and everyone else. In all of us, these are more aspirational than actual, but they are central in our intentions.
• Force of Ideas: At the center of Atlantic Media work are the ideas within our writing. We believe that ideas – to the good and not – have consequence. Our highest work is bringing rigor, insight, intellectual honesty, to that ultimate purpose of separating the bad from the good, and giving voice to the latter.
• Spirit of Generosity: Atlantic Media seeks in its ranks a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition in each colleague toward service and selfless conduct. Atlantic Media writing should be cut from the same cloth – critical on the merits but informed by charity and forbearance in measuring motive and personal character.
Atlantic Media is an EOE of Minorities/Women/Vets/Disability.
Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
