Introduction
Established in 2016, the EIU’s Public Policy Consulting practice specialises in evidence-based insights that create impact by building awareness and influencing policy on the biggest issues facing our world. We do this by connecting organizations’ strategies to policy aims and delivering solutions that empower clients to shape policy issues with influencers inside and outside government. Uniquely, we combine the depth of a think tank with the reach of a global media company. Our clients include leading companies, governments and non-profits.
Based in Washington, D.C., the Senior Consultant will work with the team to grow our Public Policy consulting business in North America. She/he will have a strong commercial aptitude, with the ability to delight clients and deepen client relationships. You will also work directly with clients to define and deliver their project requirements, and will actively work to identify and win new clients and programs. This is a key client-facing consultant role on an entrepreneurial, high-growth, global team. The Senior Consultant will have a keen interest in global public policy issues and a natural intellectual curiosity.
Accountabilities
How you will contribute:
Project execution
• Conceptualize client solutions and develop methodologies and research techniques appropriate to ensure client goals are met.
• Acts as project leader for multiple client engagements simultaneously.
• Responsible for final results, quality of the project and overall client satisfaction.
• Effectively manages project team members, including performance management.
• Present interim project status and final project deliverables to clients.
Business development
• Functioning as a Senior Consultant, serve as a consultant and commercial liaison, working to deepen client relationships, develop a book of client business and collaborate closely with representatives of other Economist Group businesses in North America.
• Serve as a senior client contact for key regional accounts – use influence and position to renew and grow these accounts, deepening the relationships with these clients; build and maintain relationships with key clients to ensure business is renewed and expanded. Responsible for the business development process from initial outreach to contract drafting, and contributing to team revenue targets.
• Actively support regional business development activities through the generation of compelling proposals for new business development as well as consultant-driven opportunities.
Capacity building
• Coach, train and mentor other team members in matters of career and personal development.
• Develop methods and approaches for research/services that will help to scale up the EIU Public Policy business and to ensure consistent quality of output.
• Work with other parts of the Economist Intelligence Unit, including Media Businesses, to secure valuable input to Public Policy projects.
Management
• Manage regional consultant(s), including planning and overseeing the project resourcing and career development of team member(s);
• Support Regional Director in the regional resource (staff) assignments for both business development and project delivery, ensuring appropriate staffing that is organized and tracked through our project management software.
Experience, skills and professional attributes
The desirable skills for this role include:
• Keen interest in global public policy issues, as well as a natural intellectual curiosity
• Proven experience in corporate or government consulting (client-facing experience is ideal)
• Proven track record of effective project management; meeting deadlines under pressure
• Ability to influence people and manage effectively in ambiguity
• Strong analysis and critical thinking skills; ability resolve complex and unfamiliar problems in a timely manner and gather/analyze information skillfully
• Strong interpersonal skills to create easy working relationship with internal team, as well as clients and partners
• Strong management experience and proven ability to motivate and lead a team
• Proven ability to develop business from new and / or existing consulting accounts
• Client management experience; comfortable with significant client interaction and interest in building relationships
• Experience dealing with and presenting to senior-level policymakers and executives
• Expert knowledge of economic and policy research methodologies
• Familiarity with statistical programs
