Overview
HarperOne Group is currently seeking an Art Director to manage and oversee designs for HarperVia (a new imprint publishing mostly fiction in translation), Amistad, and Spanish Language. Reporting to the President and Publisher, the Art Director will focus primarily on fiction and will serve as a central liaison between editorial, publishing, and managing editorial. This position will not only be responsible for specific assigned titles, but will also work closely with other designers as appropriate.
Responsibilities
• Interprets and anticipates the needs of editors and publisher and, in turn, directs designers, photographers, and illustrators to meet those needs.
• Directs staff on every stage of the book design process, from concept to final publication.
• Concepts and creates jackets and covers.
• Reviews portfolios and researches competition in search of new designers/illustrators.
• Collaborates with editors, authors, sales, marketing and production staff on book titles.
• Color corrects all stages of proof in house.
• Engages with freelancers when necessary.
• Keeps projects on a timely schedule to maintain publication dates.
Qualifications
• Must possess 7 to 10 years of prior relevant work experience in trade book publishing
• Demonstrated experience working with both fiction and nonfiction
• Knowledge of typography, graphic design, book manufacturing, printing, and production
• Proficient with the Adobe Creative Suite
• Excellent communication skills
• Detailed-oriented, well organized and able to set priorities under pressure
• Proven ability to work with all levels of management in various departments
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to problem solve
• Must possess college degree or equivalent work experience
