Overview
We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Editor to join the Harper Design imprint within our General Books Group!
Responsibilities
• Prepares schedules for all books licensed from foreign publishers, and shepherding each project through the editorial, design, copyediting, and production process.
• Acts as a liaison between VP/Publisher and Executive Editor and Sales, Marketing, Production, Design, and Managing Editorial departments and is responsible for staying abreast of all deadlines.
• Deals directly with high profile authors, artists, and agents.
• Coordinates all eBook creation.
• Assists in the timely response to all submissions; may aid in the acquisitions process by reading, editing and evaluating manuscripts, writing reader’s reports, conducting market research, and researching sales figures on prospective author’s previous titles as well as relevant competitive titles.
• Writes descriptive copy at all levels: fact sheets, catalog copy, and jacket copy.
• Responsible for updating a title management database.
• Prepares and types forms, including contract requests and amendments, profit and loss statements, production memos, estimate requests, shipping instructions, library of congress number requests, and payment requests.
• Helps prepare and distribute sales materials as necessary: printing layouts, wrapping book dummies, and seasonal PowerPoint presentations for launch meetings.
• Performs all administrative duties for titles, including typing, filing, printing copies, photocopying, distributing book advances and author copies, mailing/shipping, and sending out packages.
• Formats and transmits final manuscripts to Production Department, including proper presentation of copyright materials, art logs, and special instructions from editor.
• Assists with departmental tasks as needed, including taking and updating meeting minutes, processing invoices, filing expense reports, requesting author payments, ordering supplies, managing interns.
• Updates Harper Design social media accounts.
Qualifications
• 4 year college degree or equivalent work experience
• A minimum of 1 year of prior publishing experience
• Excellent verbal and writing skills
• Comfortable making presentations to groups
• Exceptional organizational skills with strong attention to detail
• Highly motivated and eager to learn, with proven ability to work independently
• Ability to work effectively with all levels of management
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office
• Interest in non-fiction visual books
