Advertising Director, O, The Oprah Magazine
O, The Oprah Magazine seeks a proven Advertising Sales leader, manager, and motivator. The successful candidate will be responsible for ad sales strategy and revenue generation, and will take a leadership role (in partnership with the Publisher and Associate Publisher) for driving print and digital ad revenue. The Ad Director will be responsible for managing and developing the sales staff—helping to recruit, train, and monitor sales efforts of the national sales team—as well as reaching assigned sales goals. Ideal candidate must have a collaborative leadership style and entrepreneurial spirit combined with an expertise in cross platform selling and strategy.
This position will work in tandem with O Magazine management to identify, strategize, and ultimately grow key current and developmental accounts. Responsibilities include issue forecasting and business updates, analysis of share of market and key marketplace and/or personnel issues, holding quarterly account reviews and development of actionable plans for the sales team to implement. This position requires strong interpersonal skills and working relationships with marketing, editorial, digital and corporate sales.
Additional job responsibilities include the layout and positioning of the magazine each month, alerting the editorial team to changes in book size and required adjacencies to fulfill advertising guarantees. Working with the General Manager of the magazine, the position will include oversight of pricing, both for run of book ad pages and high impact inserts.
Position dually reports to the Publisher and Associate Publisher of Sales and Marketing.
Key Responsibilities
• Accountable for attaining established ad revenue goals/quotas through innovative, creative, strategic and consultative selling.
• Manage a sales team to promote maximum sales coverage and activity.
• Work with staff to develop and execute individual sales action plans.
• Manage bi-monthly sales meetings, to motivate, incentivize, and educate the team on upcoming editorial/marketing opportunities.
• Work with Publisher and Associate Publisher to ensure marketing programs and strategy drive advertising and revenue objectives.
• Monitor all sales activity through to close and regularly provide accurate revenue projections/ sales forecasts including negotiating rates and advertiser/vendor contracts.
• Work with production/ad services and oversee book layout/positioning, and editorial issues.
• Establish workflow and processes for advertising forecasting, budgeting and goal setting.
• Form a solid and positive working relationship with editorial staff and develop relationships with other Hearst titles, corporate and HDM partners to encourage collaborative selling.
• Work closely and meet regularly with Publisher & Associate Publisher on overall business and personnel issues.
Requirements/Skills/Experience
• Minimum 5 years of magazine advertising sales experience in the beauty and fashion categories including experience in a national leadership role
• Must have experience hiring and managing a sales team and have a proven record as a strategic and effective leader/manager
• Superior sales skills, with results-oriented track record and proven ability to meet and exceed sales goals
• Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to multi-task
