Overview
The managing editor is the newsroom leader for the mobile era. The Managing Editor directs the news, sports, features and audience staffs on a daily basis, ensuring that reporting, editing, presentation, photographic, video and digital goals are met. The managing editor is the operational newsroom executive overseeing all content creation and publication, managing budgets and deploying resources in line with mission, audience trends and business KPIs. The managing editor will be among the savviest digital leaders in the newsroom, fluent in the latest media trends, and adept at instilling and executing culture change. The managing editor will exhibit strong leadership, communication and digital management skills, with the vision and stamina to manage a 24/7 digital newsroom. Strong on both content creation and digital publication, including social media, SEO, video, etc., the managing editor will ensure digital success by establishing performance metrics and holding the newsroom accountable for reaching them. The managing editor will also represent the newsroom to the business side and work with the Editor in Chief to make sure that business objectives are reflected in the newsroom’s operation. The managing editor should have superior people management skills, including a combination of toughness and sensitivity, and an ability to think strategically about audience, media and operating in the economic landscape.
Responsibilities
Major responsibilities:
• Leading the newsroom to deliver on mission, achieve business KPIs and adapt for the future
• Managing budgets, deploying resources and directing content and audience editors to meet newsroom goals
• Establishing performance metrics and holding the newsroom accountable for reaching them
• Making judgments about assignments, coverage and play for daily news, sports and features reports
• Planning major enterprise and investigative stories, special projects and unique news coverage
• Managing major departments and supervising content directors
• Working with Editor in Chief in developing and implementing news and organizational strategy
• Representing the newsroom across the business unit and collaborating with the business side and the Editor in Chief to ensure that company objectives are reflected in the newsroom’s operation
• Creating a culture that encourages innovation, holds employees accountable and offers development opportunities
• Establishing the guidelines for the presentation of stories, information, photos and video for all appropriate digital channels
• Working to increase employee engagement and instill a learning culture that strives to grow engaged audiences.
• Working with the Editor in Chief to make ultimate decisions in the hiring, firing, promotion and development of employees across the newsroom
• Effectively managing change and crises, inspiring the staff to quality and maximum productivity, and minimizing legal exposure.
• Recruiting and developing diverse talent
• Managing Editorial budgets, including compensation, expenses and travel. Planning annual spending and coming in at or below annual spending targets.
• Harnessing audience data to drive content and personnel decisions, aiming for content that is of interest to the local audience, maximizes engagement and drives subscriptions
• Making smart, data-driven decisions on story promotion, inclusion and emphasis across all platforms, from sites to apps to email newsletters to social to alerts
• Guiding team to improve performance on social channels, including brand accounts for Twitter and/or Facebook as required.
• Measuring performance of digital content through audience engagement metrics and helping develop tactics and strategies to build audience
• Ensuring the department hits deadlines and other production goals, for all products
Qualifications
Basic foundation skills:
• The energy and entrepreneurial spirit to raise the competitive metabolism of the entire newsroom.
• Deep familiarity with online metrics and audience tracking systems.
• Exceptional news judgment and proven ability at carving out distinctive angles on major news events
• Ability to articulate the importance and benefits of culture change and advocate for it across the newsroom
• Knowledge of media industry economics and challenges facing legacy media companies
• Solid grasp of the rules of grammar, spelling, punctuation. Ability to write and edit accurately, with clarity, without bias.
• Fluency with analytics and ability to translate data into tactics and strategies, including ability to use metrics from Chartbeat, Adobe Analytics, social and other tools.
• Knowledge of Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms and ability to develop/follow best practices for social.
• Knowledge of SEO best practices and ability to research SEO and appropriately populate fields and headlines.
• An ability to multitask in a deadline-driven environment, and adapt constructively to change
• Personal or professional experience using web-based social networks
• Adherence to the Tribune and editorial codes of ethics.
• Maintaining up-to-date skills on various digital platforms and keeping abreast of current events and newsmakers in news, sports and pop culture.

• At least 10 years of experience in newsroom management, including a significant period managing in a digital newsroom
Work relationships:
Reports to Editor in Chief. Directly supervises directors of content, senior content editors and, occasionally, senior reporters. Interacts daily with supervisor and staff and often with other departments in the company, including central and market teams. Managing own time and directing his or herself with minimal to moderate supervision most of the day.
Number supervised: Directly supervise up to 10; indirectly supervise up to 300 others.
Requirements:
A minimum of 10 years of editing or management experience at a news publication, including significant experience in an online newsroom; knowledge of and acceptance of Tribune's mission and strategy; excellent command of oral and written English. Must be able and willing to work irregular hours as necessary.
