Director, Development Special Projects
The Opportunity:
This is a unique opportunity to join the Sony Pictures Television team managing projects supporting content strategy. This position will partner with leadership teams and will have operational and strategic input for developing, recommending & implementing solutions for business needs specifically related to Talent Partnerships, Development Strategy and Intellectual Property. Reports to President, SPT Studios.
Responsibilities:
Trends & Data
• Work with leadership to recognize external trends and with research, consumer & marketing teams ensure that these are being considered in the development of our content, partnerships & IP deployment strategy.
• Capture and incorporate feedback from leadership and internal partners on how best to grow business with external networks and buyers into strategy outcomes.
Talent
• Generate talent lists and track showrunners, directors, writers, producers with whom we could collaborate.
• Review trades and agency reporting to keep current our awareness of availability of talent.
• Ensure we have diverse talent portfolio that aligns with our strategic objectives.
• Fosters and maintains strong relationships with creative talent. Stay aware of emerging talent.
• Support the development and benchmarking of innovative deal terms and standards, working with the Creative & BA teams.
Intellectual Property
• Generate lists of IP available or potential ability to development team – both SPE owned IP & franchises – including SPT & MPG owned content.
• Participate in the cross-studio collaboration efforts to re-energize IP that may have been passed on by other divisions.
• Drive the creation & documentation of rights ownership & availability and communicate these to relevant stakeholders.
• Prepare and coordinate the development of pitch materials for IP projects as appropriate.
Project Management
• Responsible for the execution of projects and actions related to the development of our talent partnership and content development strategy;
◦ Build deep understanding of the industry talent pools through data collection & research
◦ Working with our internal teams, create and deliver business recommendation/s, including a detailed strategy & plans.
◦ Analyze, synthesize & recommend solutions.
◦ Project manage to timely completion the final recommended solution to key Stakeholders, working with & leading a team of employees & partners to implement. Regularly update senior management with the status of all pending matters in a format approved by senior management.
• Prepare and manage the relevant documents for internal & external approval processes as necessary.
• Analyze & ensure compliance with SPE and SPT policies.
Communication
• Demonstrable flexibility, professionalism, and finesse when handling the multiple and diverse demands of a creative environment.
• Create and implement systems and procedures to improve effectiveness of communication around talent & IP within SPE divisions and with other Sony companies.
• Participate in creative meetings involving executives, and key creative leadership teams.
• Organize systems and written materials, acting as a liaison for internal teams.
• Liaise with Executives of other Sony divisions. Maintain open line of communication to address common issues. Where appropriate, problem solve solutions to improve communications between divisions & companies.
Requirements:
• A "big picture" thinker and strategist, able to stand above the day to day deliverables when required and contribute meaningfully to the strategy of the company, but who is also attuned to details required for successful execution;
• Very strong project management skills; experience managing large virtual teams across internal and external partners and driving the team to timely results.
• Knowledge of entertainment industry talent pools - development executives, writers, producers, and agents.
• Highly effective use of reliable research sources and data analysis.
• Established track record of successfully developing and managing projects and deliverable in a complex environment.
• Hands-on experience at working with an organization undergoing change and growth in a competitive, creative and fast-moving environment.
• Ability to balance and integrate both international and domestic perspectives
• The highest standard in influencing and interpersonal skills, in order to build and develop strong partnerships.
• Excellent relationship manager - Demonstrated ability to work effectively across a complex array of relationships, including peers, colleagues, and superiors, with a special emphasis on communicating creative goals.
• Ability to thrive in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
• Diplomacy and discretion.
• MBA preferred.
• Ideally 5 years’ plus experience in business management, ideally with experience consulting with organizations in the past. As well as experience in the television market with hands-on experience in development and production.
• Travel as required globally.
