Editorial Assistant: Viking Books for Young Readers
This position reports to three editors at Viking Children’s Books, providing administrative and editorial support while communicating with authors, agents, and different departments within the division. The ideal candidate is an ambitious self-starter who is both creative and detail-oriented and can juggle multiple priorities. An enthusiasm for and knowledge of books for young readers, particularly for picture books and graphic novels, is essential. Must be a strong writer and critical thinker who enjoys a wide range of titles for children--from literary to commercial.
Responsibilities include:
• Assists with daily editorial activities, including proposal/manuscript screening and project follow-up.
• Acts as a liaison between authors, agents, and different departments within the company.
• Assists in all processes of book production from acquisition to publication.
• Reads, tracks, and evaluates manuscripts and agented submissions, suggests cuts or revisions, and writes reader reports.
• Prepares front matter, copyright, flap and cover text.
• Drafts P&Ls, contract proposals, catalog copy, and Title Information sheets.
• Assists with scheduling of titles, creating spreadsheets, and list planning.
• Inter-faces with Library of Congress in the obtaining of CIP data and LC numbers.
• Attends and contributes ideas at editorial meetings.
• Provides computer support to editorial staff.
• Maintains and orders books for imprint bookroom.
• Writes jacket and catalog copy, sales copy, fact sheets, blurbs, and teasers.
• Keeps up to date regarding promotion, publicity, and reviews status of books.
• Reads review journals and competition titles to be aware of trends and competitors’ lists.
• Conducts photo research as necessary.
• Provides clerical support, including completing/trafficking forms and other paperwork; filing; handling correspondence; answering phones; mailing, etc.
• Proofreads and copyedits.
• Assists in maintaining imprint social media presence.
• Cultivates editorial sensibility & builds skills necessary for future list building.
• Prepares PowerPoint presentations for List launch meetings.
Requirements include:
• Excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to prioritize workload
• Strong communication skills, both verbal & written
• Strong interpersonal skills, & ability to deal with challenging people & situations
• Ability to work independently
• Be a creative thinker and enjoy brainstorming
• Be inclined to think visually as well verbally
• Effective time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
• Ability to work well in collaborative environment
• Computer skills – MS Word , Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
• Experience in publishing, particularly publishing-related internships, is preferred but not required.
