Project Manager:
The Project Manager will plan for and manage all aspects of production for print, static digital format (PDF), and structured content (XML), from definition of project and components to delivery of press-ready PDF files to Manufacturing, ready-to-vend digital files, or structured content to Engineering.
Primary Responsibities:
1. Budget, schedule, plan, and manage production process for multi-component products in print, e-pub, and other digital formats, working in close collaboration with in-house Editors, Designers, Software Development staff as well as external vendors. Specific tasks to be coordinated include copyediting, proofreading, content review, design, indexing, typesetting, formatting, and structuring of content.
2. In collaboration with Director of Production, develop project production budgets, solicit bids from outside vendors, create and submit contract requests, track expenses against production budget. Re-forecast as scope and specifications change. Process and track all invoicing from outside production vendors.
3. Create detailed production schedules and status reports. Ensure adherence to schedule. Keep status reports up to date. Conduct weekly project status meetings (or as required by scope of project). Maintain and route as needed accurate, up-to-date records in publishing databases, including product spec database.
4. Plan for and coordinate XML coding which may take place in various stages of production with a variety of tools depending on the type of product. Review corrected proofs and bug reports, resolving queries throughout the production process, including art and text issues in production.
5. As needed, make text and layout corrections directly into application files. QC files prior to transmission to ensure compliance with printer specs our end-user requirements.
Education Level and or relevant experience
Required:
Associates Degree
1 or more years pre-press print and/or digital publishing project management
Preferred:
Bachelors Degree or higher
3 or more years print production with background in XML and/or structured content
Knowledge and skills (general and technical)
• Thorough understanding of principles of print and digital content production
• Ability to work in fast-paced environment under tight deadlines
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Proficiency in appropriate software, including Mac OS X and Windows XP and 7, InDesign, Quark XPress, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Digital Editions (primarily in Mac environment)
• Familiarity with XML-based Content Management systems and Digital Asset Management systems
• Familiarity with educational publishing styles, designs, and layouts.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including track changes function in Word and PDF, as well as scheduling and calculating functions in Excel.
• Familiarity with OpenText Artesia CMS, Woodwing publishing tools
• Familiarity with educational publishing industry standards including NIMAS, SIMRA, and adoption processes
Physical Requirements
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
• The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
