Requirements
Position Description:
Working at TDA for the imprints Tor Teen and Starscape as an Editorial Assistant, this individual will be a key member of the editorial team, providing editorial and extensive administrative support to Senior Editors within the Children’s and Young Adult Department. The Senior Editors acquire all categories for both Teen and Young Readers including science fiction/fantasy, horror, mystery, thriller, contemporary fiction.
Major Responsibilities:
• Significant amount of data entry, maintenance, and management; manage book descriptions, author bios, quotes, and other information for use in-house and by online retailers
• Manage and update publishing production schedule
• Prepare manuscripts for production; interact with the production department and with authors to ensure that books move through the process smoothly and on time
• Keep track of key deadlines relating both to production and the sales cycle for each individual book edited by each Senior Editor tracking deadlines in a timely manner and take independent steps to meet those deadlines
• Track submissions, research sales history, and generate profitability projections for possible acquisitions
• Fill out contract requests, check requests, cover concept memos, and other paperwork
• Interact with all departments within TDA, including sales and marketing, advertising and promotion, publicity, art, digital marketing, etc.
• Write copy for catalog, jackets/covers, and in-house use; adapt existing copy for different purposes
• Build and maintain one- sheets for books and authors
• Assist in assessing projects’ commercial potential by quickly reading submissions and reporting on their quality either verbally or in writing as requested
• Interact directly with authors and agents; respond diplomatically to numerous, detailed, sometimes last-minute requests
• Interact with Macmillan employees and departments; represent the editors and Tor Teen and Starscape Books both within Macmillan and to the wider world
• General administrative support including: setting up appointments, scheduling meetings
Required Skills / Knowledge:
• Superior organizational skills
• Intense attention to detail
• Ability to master procedures quickly, set priorities, and work independently
• Ability to meet deadlines and to multi-task
• Ease with social media
• Knowledge of Word and Excel; knowledge of a variety of data-tracking and database management tools—and/or a short learning curve when presented with a new one—a plus
• Excellent grammar, punctuation, and general writing skills a must. Candidate must be able to quickly read and analyze text and generate plot summaries or rough copy with limited turnaround time
• Candidate should have a working knowledge of current Young Adult and Young Readers genre fiction (science fiction, fantasy, thriller and commercial fiction).
• Facility with electronic calendars and Gmail beneficial
• Candidate should be able to think on their feet and remain cool under pressure
• Candidate should be a self-starter armed with curiosity
Educational Background Required:
• Bachelor’s Degree
