The Group Manager, Publishing Review Services
• Is a people manager responsible for ensuring the on-schedule review of print and digital content so that it is grammatically correct, clear, consistent, accurate, and complete and adheres to required styles and publishing and production standards and specifications.
• Trains, coaches, and gives team members development opportunities and project assignments that meet professional and personal development needs as well as organizational and business needs.
• Aligns team members’ work to the company’s strategic vision and empowers team members to make decisions and take action in support of the vision.
• Leads team members in working extensively and collaboratively with other HMH functional groups to meet project resourcing needs within budgetary guidelines, solve problems, and implement best practices to ensure product quality.
The Group Manager has several direct reports and has significant team leadership and staff management responsibilities. We are seeking a seasoned people manager with demonstrated ability to build and motivate a cohesive, high-performance team. Ideally this manager would have subject matter expertise in content reviews such as copyediting, proofreading, fact checking, and the like.
This position is within a dynamic Shared Services organization with opportunities for professional learning and participation in operational initiatives.
Requirements:
• BS/BA in related discipline.
• At least 5 years of people management or equivalent experience in related industry or functional area.
• Proven track record of increased responsibility
• 5 yrs of leadership experience and/or equivilent publishing experience
• Strong communication and leadership skills. Verbal and written communication must be professional, comprehensive, clear, direct, and accurate.
• High level of organization; ability to manage several projects simultaneously and prioritize.
• Expert knowledge of industry related practices and standards.
• Ability to influence groups.
• Ability to make value judgments and prioritize tasks within the full realm of responsibilities.
• Capable of dealing with expected and unexpected change. Drives change to improve performance and address changing business conditions.
• Builds and maintains lasting cooperative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and leverages relationships to meet organizational objectives within functional framework.
• Thorough knowledge of editorial and English-language conventions and print and/or digital production and publishing processes
Preferred:
• Master’s, postgraduate, or professional degree in related discipline
• At least 10 years of project management experience
• At least 5 years of print and/or digital production or publishing experience, preferably in educational publishing
• At least 5 years of copyediting, proofreading, and/or other content quality assurance experience
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
• The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
