Overview

The Editor for the Thomas Nelson Bible and Study Resources team is responsible for independently managing and developing assigned and elected projects under the supervision of the Publisher. These may include new titles, repackaged/repurposed titles, line extensions, print and digital products. The Editor should work productively in an interdisciplinary team environment and with outside partners, such as authors and freelance proofreaders, but also thrive as an independent self-starter.
Responsibilities
Editorial and Author Relations
• Perform or oversee editorial processes for text, reference, and children’s Bibles, working with outside freelancers to handle copyediting and proofreading tasks, and performing or managing the proofing of the typeset pages
• Manage the details of numerous complex projects at once, such as setting up appropriate filing systems, creating feature maps, and facilitating the approval of final files
• Ensure alignment with house style guides
• Create contract/addendum/work-for-hire requests
• Make phone calls to authors and agents
• Work with authors on manuscript deadlines, Advance Marketing/Sales Information (AMSI) due dates, and other project needs
• Responsible for managing and maintaining excellent author service
• Review and edit marketing copy as needed. Provide input to marketing copy for ads, selling and promotional materials
• Evaluate proposals and manuscripts as assigned
• Willing to represent the Thomas Nelson Bible team at conferences and events
Project Management & Product Development
• Review project list throughout the year, research potential projects, and schedule re-covers and updated editions.
• Support Publisher in preparation for and presenting at Sales Conference.
• Actively participate in developing new product proposals, reviewing product proposals to make recommendations for publishing, and analyzing current products.
• Research competition for title, cover, and similar topics.
• Prepare and complete product proposal forms and share updates at publishing boards as needed.
Qualifications
Knowledge: 4 years editorial experience in publishing
Education:Bachelor's degree in English or similar field, Master’s in Bible or related field preferred
Skills:
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong command of the English language
• Ability to anticipate needs, plan ahead, and effectively encourage planning ahead
• Proven organizational skills, with ability to prioritize and manage a wide variety of tasks and resources across multiple projects and meet deadlines
• Ability to professionally and cordially interact with authors and agents
• Ability to distill numerous pieces of information and communicate key points to others
• Excellent verbal and written interpersonal skills, with timely communication, especially expressing difficult/sensitive information tactfully; ability to identify team conflict and communication problems
• Strong project management skills, ability to multitask, works well under pressure
• Excellent organizational skills and budget management skills
• Able to prioritize, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines
• Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style
• Microsoft Office application skills (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
