Job Description
WWL-TV, the TEGNA Media station in New Orleans, is looking for a multi-platform content manager to join our award-winning team.
The position calls for the occupant to set up digital and broadcast assignments with a ‘digital first’ mentality. The successful candidate will have a strong sense of which platforms users turn to most frequently at different times of the day and the week. The weekend content manager is charged with getting crews to prioritize digital and social platforms including Facebook Live, midday digital stories and alerts.
The job holder would also be tasked with updating the digital platforms – social media, web site, app – on the weekends, including sending out alerts, writing and publishing stories and videos, gathering content for digital use and culling other resources for online content.
We emphasize ‘bringing the news to the viewer’ by push alerts, which we use strategically; and social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other.
The digital producer/weekend assignment editor reports to the Digital Director, but also to the news ‘on-call’ weekend manager and the news director.
Responsibilities:
• Post stories to all of WWL-TV’s digital and social platforms
• Report news quickly and accurately as it happens online (with strong breaking news skills) and generate web traffic using a combination of SEO-friendly writing and advanced social media skills
• Post photos and other content to WWLTV.COM, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Instagram Stories
• Monitor real-time analytics, such as Chartbeat, to maximize reader engagement and learn what kind of stories perform well
• Efficiently scour the Internet, including local Facebook groups, Reddit threads, Twitter and Crowdtangle, for viral or impactful stories the audience cares about
• Help with answering the newsroom phone, monitoring emails and adding story tips to the daily planner
• Participate in news editorial meetings, pitching ideas and working with staff to develop original and unique story ideas for digital and TV
• Setting up weekend story assignments for social, digital and on-air platforms.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
• At least two years’ experience working as a digital journalist
• Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills
• Strong news judgement
• Excellent communication skills
• Experience posting to various digital and social media platforms
• Ability to prioritize and manage requests from various sources with an ability to work well with varied personalities within deadlines
• Outstanding interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills
• Understanding of media ethics as well as fair and unbiased reporting practices
• You must be a self-starter who we can count on
• Experience with YouTube channels, non-linear editing software, Search Engine Optimization or using Chartbeat are a huge plus
