Project Managers (PM) are responsible for overseeing multiple projects during the production process of textbook and digital products. PMs must organize complex, long-term projects, working closely with editorial colleagues and external vendors to meet strict deadlines. The PM is responsible for ensuring communication throughout their projects and ensuring quality standards are achieved for our products.
Key Results Area / Main Activities and Responsibilities:
Project Management:
Tracking and maintaining project schedules. PMs must be capable of overseeing multiple schedules, ensuring dates are met, or proactively identifying potential issues and communicating these with key members of the project team. PMs may need to negotiate when dates need to be adjusted. PMs must be able to manage their workflow independently around project schedules.
Monitoring other key areas of the project including budget and extent to ensure projects stay within established parameters. PMs should identify issues before they occur and identify potential solutions.
Coordinating project needs in areas such as design, artwork, permissions, XML, and multimedia.
Project Communication:
Manage communication for projects including: setting and leading meetings with the project team, directing vendors and providing feedback, author and internal editor meetings, and other meetings as needed. Methods of communication include IM, email, phone, Skype and videoconference and involve communication with individuals located around the globe. PMs must communicate frequently to advise about project dates, issues and overall progress.
Quality Assurance of Projects:
Ensuring quality during the production process by working closely with authors and internal editors to discuss requirements, and ensuring standards are met by external parties such as compositors, copyeditors, proofreaders, indexers, etc.
PMs are responsible for evaluating the status and quality of received content and organizing files during production to ensure accurate and timely delivery of final files.
Proof Collation:
Collation of corrections during proof rounds, ensuring accuracy and adherence to Elsevier guidelines and style. This may also be managed by an external supplier, in which case the PM must closely manage the supplier to ensure adherence to standards and schedule deadlines.
Continuous Improvement:
Participation in Continuous Improvement projects to ensure best practices.

Functional and Technical Competencies:
• Intermediate/advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel in particular) and Adobe Acrobat
• Familiarity with XML and media a plus
• PMs use multiple web-based systems, candidates must be comfortable working online and learning new systems quickly
• Experience using PPM, Intuit QuickBase and EMSS a plus
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience (and any other requirements):
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required, preferably in English, Journalism
• At least 2 years of experience in publishing or project management/coordination
• Individuals must be highly organized, extremely detail-oriented and strong problem solvers
• Candidates must be skilled communicators, written and verbally, and able to maintain strong relationships with internal and external contacts
• Individuals must be able to work independently, prioritize and maintain schedules for multiple projects
• Copyediting and proofreading skills helpful – at a minimum, candidates must have a college level understanding and usage of the English language
