Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is seeking a strategic HR Business Partner to join our HR team. The HRBP is a key partner supporting department leaders and their teams through people strategy, change management, training, performance management, and operating the annual HR initiatives. The HRBP is responsible for advising on employee relations, growth and development, training opportunities, and succession planning. The HRBP is a center of knowledge for their assigned business units, using their strategic skills, communication abilities, and business acumen to be devoted & knowledgeable partners to serve their internal customers.
Responsibilities
• Takes a proactive approach with business groups to anticipate, assess, and provide HR solutions in relation to business needs, with guidance as needed from HR Director.
• Provides timely and effective advice on HR-related matters to employees and managers.
• Partners with other HR functional areas as needed to resolve internal customer issues.
• Acts as a change agent in supporting integration efforts and driving cultural change.
• Implements many aspects of the HR/Business priorities for client.
• Supports efforts around increasing employee and manager engagement.
• Coaches functional management to increase people manager acumen and accountability.
• Acts as an employee champion and identifies trends to help inform/support management to build an effective culture at HMH.
• Contributes to the design of, and delivers, HR-related communications for client.
• Proactively ensures an understanding of the messages and adherence to changes by client.
• Familiarization and usage of various HR tools with the ability to pull in and report on data.
• Leverage data to influence recommendations and gain support from client stakeholders with HR initiatives and specific client inquiries.
Experience and Skills Required
• Ability to deal effectively with ambiguity, recognize trends, and identify systemic approaches to solving problems in a fast-moving, constantly changing environment.
• Demonstrated skills in business acumen, consulting, project management, communication, presentation, negotiation, conflict management, and problem solving.
• Experience facilitating meetings and trainings.
• Ability to work in an open space professional environment and handle confidential information.
• Demonstrated competence in organizational development, coaching, compensation, and employee relations.
• Experience working and mentoring managers at various level.
An exceptional candidate for this role has
• Experience with Sr. level Generalist or HRBP experience in a tech or publishing company.
• Experience in employee engagement, L&D, compensation planning, and performance management in a B2B/SaaS environment.
• Experience in a R&D organization / a strong understanding of tech culture.
• SPHR, SHRM-CP, MBA, or Master’s related field is a plus!
Experience Required: Min of 3 years of Strategic HR experience with a majority of that experience performing exempt-level HR responsibilities; strong coaching and manager development experience.
Required Knowledge: Knowledge of federal and state regulations and compliance; broad understanding of HR principles and practices.

Physical Requirements:
• • Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
• The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
