Responsibilities:
Creates, develops, plans, writes, and edits operational, instructional, maintenance, or test procedures for print, app, multimedia, and web-based publication. Meets with colleagues and technical staff to gather data for documentation. Works with User Research when possible to gather input directly from users/user proxies. Researches and interprets technical information to write manuals and/or digital documentation and in-app user support for nontechnical and technical users. May document design specifications, and possibly occasional engineering processes. Recommends formats responsive to technical and customer requirements. Produces products that conforms to the company documentation and quality assurance standards. Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Collaborates with interaction design, industrial design, user research, and other partner organizations (engineering, software, marketing, legal, safety, etc.) to ensure best quality user-centered experience design is delivered and company requirements are met. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
Top Must-Haves:
• Excellent writing skill and understanding of technical writing standards.
• Experience creating end-user documentation for consumer electronics (or similar).
• Responsibility and reliability—follow-through, attention to detail, and the ability to consistently meet aggressive deadlines and work to a schedule, as well as to juggle multiple assignments.
• Technical capability with primary software tools (Adobe InDesign and Creative Suite a must).
• Ability to integrate into cross-functional technical teams. Must have experience working in teams; the writer is not a team of one.
Additional Skills:
2 years minimum in creating end-user documentation: owner's guides, setup guides, instructions, app-based documentation and text for UIs, wizards, etc. (Experience creating end-user documentation for consumer electronics or similar products ideal.)
Experience with digital communication methods (web, on-screen display, mobile devices).
Experience in visual communication and layout a plus.
Experience with print production processes and workflows ideal.
Functional understanding of translation/localization methods.
Experience with Microsoft Office and related basic computing tools.
Education Requirements:
BA/MA preferred, in English, Technical Communications, related field or equivalent experience.
