Staff Writer - Members Team - CQ Roll Call

Currently, CQ Roll Call is seeking an energetic and skilled journalist to join the team that chronicles House and Senate members, their offices, elections and biographies. The ideal candidate will be highly organized and offer a strong knowledge of congressional structure and process. Experience in congressional office organization and function would be a plus for the successful applicant. Strong collaboration is a must, as the candidate would work daily with CQ Roll Call’s team of reporters, editors and researchers to produce excellent content for our newsletter, website, mobile app and other products.
The candidate will have demonstrated the energy and determination to provide accurate, clear, fast and smart news on multiple platforms. Applicants should have experience at a news organization, familiarity with Congress, a commitment to strong, watchdog coverage of policy making in Washington, and the ability to convey sometimes complicated information in a clear and lively manner.
Accountabilities
In the role you would be expected to:
• Research, write and fact-check biographical and congressional data, elections outcome information, and district information
• Write clearly and concisely on deadline
• Monitor events in Congress for changes in biographical information
• Use established best practices to share information through social media
• Assist with production duties to ensure timely publication of updates
• Maintain a strong awareness of congressional politics
• Write a weekly piece for CQ publication
Experience, skills and professional attributes
To succeed in the role you must have:
• Bachelors degree or equivalent in journalism, English, political or government studies, or other relevant disciplines
• Some Congressional experience, preferably on Capitol Hill
• Strong knowledge of Congress and federal agencies
• Strong knowledge of members of Congress
• Willingness to work weekends and evenings as needed

• Ability to use social media to promote content, develop sources and interview subjects
Adaptability to new technologies
• Ability to work long hours and meet strict deadlines
• An aptitude for professional communications in a high-level setting
