Overview
WREG Memphis, the Number 1 station in the Memphis market, is searching for a full-time Assignment Editor. The applicant fortunate enough to win this position will run the nerve center of our operation and be responsible for coordinating daily news coverage across our television and digital platforms. The successful candidate will have the ability to adapt to new platforms that haven’t been invented yet. Possession of a crystal ball is a plus, but not required. What is required, is a sense of humor and a coolness under pressure… and a love for this saucy city we call Memphis.
Memphis is news heaven. You will not be bored.
Responsibilities
• Monitoring emails, phone calls, wires, scanners and social media for news stories.
• Routing information to the people who need to know, to facilitate good decision making and responsible, timely coverage.
• Assigning and dispatching news crews, which often requires logistical sense, bold decisions and willingness to be held accountable.
• Researching and vetting stories. Assisting news crews with contacts and background.
• Ramrodding breaking news.
• Entering stories and updates into our database, planning coverage for the days and weeks to come.
• Managing and producing content on a variety of platforms including desktop, mobile sites, apps and social media
• Monitoring the competition.
• Making beat checks to law enforcement and governmental agencies.
• Coordinating coverage with affiliates, networks and other stations in our family group.
Qualifications
• Previous experience working in news as an assignment editor is preferred.
• Should possess strong news judgement, based on the strategic priorities of WREG.
• Should have a strong understanding of various social media platforms
• Must have good communication skills one-on-one, and within a team environment.
• Must be organized and able to handle to logistics of multiple news crews in the field.
• Must be able to work under deadlines, multi-task and prioritize tasks.
• Experience working in a digital content management systems is a plus.
• Must exhibit writing and proofreading skills.
• Must be flexible -- willing to work a variety of shifts including holidays and weekends.
• A four year college degree is preferred.
• Must have an understanding, or quickly develop an understanding, of the technology used in this industry; and have an ability to communicate necessary information across all work groups to insure well-coordinated coverage.
• Must be willing to submit to a background check.
• Must have unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.
