Overview and Responsibilities
Distribution & Business Development (DBD) is responsible for delivering approximately $4 billion in annual revenue to Viacom. This division negotiates distribution agreements and maximizes revenue and marketing opportunities from traditional (Comcast, DirecTV, etc.), digital (Amazon, Hulu, etc.) and new media distribution channels (Sling, DTV Now) while ensuring that fans can discover and engage with Viacom Media Networks on every available device and platform.
The Director manages the financial performance of Viacom’s $4 billion domestic affiliate revenue stream. This role supports the preparation of the budget, forecasts and long-range plan, as well as ensures the accuracy of financial reporting in accordance with accounting principles. The ideal candidate is highly analytical and must be able to understand both the big picture and granular-level detail. This position is also expected to keep up-to-date with the media industry and specific distributors via analyst reports and other sources.
The primary focus of this position is the forecasting and the management of the financial performance of the DBD division. As such, the key relationships of this position are external to DBD – Corporate Finance, Investor Relations, the Controller’s Group, the Finance teams for the operating groups (GEG, Nick, BETN), PWC and MAI. This role reports to the Sr. Director, DBD Finance.
Forecasting
• Support the preparation of the domestic affiliate subscriber and revenue forecasts: quarterly, yearly and long-range plan
• Prepare reports and presentation decks to DBD management as well as Corporate and Brand stakeholders
• Provide insightful analysis in a timely manner to drive decision-making
• Serves as a subject matter expert for the team on revenue methodology and analytic calculations, including revenue allocations
• Responsible for the accuracy of financials and coordination and maintenance of data integrity procedures
• Work closely with Sr. Director and SVP on various ad hoc analyses and projects
Accounting
• Responsible for the month-end close process. Must ensure accurate revenue calculation and reporting including AR/Bad debt package, accrual and reserve calculations, cash application, tax withholding, and other various close activities
• Prepare the quarterly reporting package (revenue analysis, including price/volume) provided to the SVP, DBD management, and Corporate stakeholders
• Liaise with the Controller’s group to ensure that all division activities are in compliance with GAAP and with company practices
• Understand terms of all new and renewal deals to implement deal components into the system
SOX/Compliance/Audits
• Ensure proper financial controls and procedures are in place, focusing on compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley Act
• Provide required documentation for PWC quarterly / annual requests
• Manage relationship with MAI, outside auditor of affiliate carriage agreements
Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economic or Business
• 7-10 years of relevant financial experience
Additional Qualifications
• Experience working in media or banking, consulting, or financial services with a focus on the media industry
• General knowledge of accounting principles
• Strategic and highly analytic mindset
• High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Excel
• Ability to multi-task, prioritize and deal with ambiguity
• Self-motivated
• Experience with SAP, Longview or similar system
• Continuous improvement mindset – ability to seek out and implement internal or external best practices
• Flexibility with work schedule
• Cable industry knowledge
