Requirements
Position Description:
Seeking an experienced designer responsible primarily, but not exclusively, for young adult science fiction and fantasy for Tor Teen. The candidate will be responsible for creating compelling and appealing designs that meet the goals set out for each title. The candidate will report to the art director of Tor Books.
Major Responsibilities:
• Design of jackets and interiors
• Research and hire new illustrators and photographers, and work closely with them through bookmaking process
• Work closely with the art directors and editors
• Present covers in jacket meetings and participate in production meetings
• Prepare files for the printer, and approve proofs and other progress materials
Required Skills / Knowledge:
• Knowledge of current trends in the young adult and science fiction/fantasy book field and a healthy curiosity about innovation in our field and related fields.
• Ability to conceive and create exceptional book design
• Skilled at photo/art/illustration research
• Strong typographic skills
• Mastery of the current Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
• Ability to work on multiple projects at once and meet tight deadlines
• Knowledge of PDF workflow
Experience Needed:
• A minimum of 5 years book experience
Educational Background Required:
• College level training at an accredited art school preferred, but not required
