Prairie Farmer Staff Writer
Job Scope: Prairie Farmer is seeking a new staff writer to cover Illinois agriculture. The ideal candidate will be located in Illinois. This person will be home-based but work closely with the Prairie Farmer editor and the rest of the Farm Progress team. Key responsibilities for this position include covering Illinois agriculture, working with local experts on key topics important to our farmer-readers and using enterprise reporting techniques to unearth topics and stories for readers. Staff writer would also engage readers through the Master Farmer program and the Farm Progress Show.
This position also requires high-level writing skills (please provide at least three samples of your most recent work), solid photography skills (please provide at least three samples), and an understanding of the role of social media and digital publishing in engaging the reader. There will be multi-media opportunities in this position as Farm Progress continues to expand its digital offering.
Responsibilities include:
• Write compelling copy for monthly magazine and daily digital news, including in-depth features and news items
• Photograph sources and stories for use in merging world of print and digital
• Develop relationships with farmer and expert sources throughout Illinois agriculture
• Represent Prairie Farmer throughout Illinois agriculture
• Work with content and art production teams in Illinois to develop both website and print products.
• Collaborate with other Farm Progress editors as needed to cover key topics for the region.
• Attend field days, meetings, conferences and events as needed for story coverage
• Help coordinate Cultivating Master Farmers program, representing Prairie Farmer
• Help slot magazine and approve pages
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Ag Communications, English or related discipline from a four-year college or university.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of business writing and editorial experience required, preferably within the agricultural or natural resources industry.
• Must be a proficient photographer, able to photograph farmers and agricultural conditions.
• Must be proficient in MS Office, Outlook.
• Must possess people management skills and experience.
• Must be highly organized, detail oriented and able to meet demanding deadlines.
