Designer, Random House Graphic
Random House Graphic is looking for a designer to join their team. The designer will be responsible for design development, art direction, desktop production and execution of jackets, covers and interiors for all Random House Graphic’s graphic novels. Manages the administrative, creative and technical design of books, covers and/or promotional materials, for Random House Graphic.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Oversees all design for book interiors and covers
• Advises on promotional / marketing materials; provides creative input for design
• Creates book covers and translates into a print-ready format for production
• Supervises art work of freelance staff to ensure quality output; assigns workload
• Directs the cover design process with illustrators; provides assistance to the editorial staff on art editing
• Formulates concepts with Publishing Director for promotional pieces
• Responsible for the semi-final review and approval of all artwork / illustrations before final approval and release to production.
• Responsible for maintaining production schedules and time tables, and for developing and monitoring budgets for all titles
• Creates mechanicals necessary for the publishing process
• Works closely with editorial and marketing departments throughout design process
• Works with editorial to hire art freelancers when needed: letterers, colorists, etc.; also trains and supervises freelance staff
• Will coordinate vendor and in-house capabilities and procedures
• Supervises the maintenance of electronic files archiving procedures
• Ensures that a sufficient amount of art supplies are ordered for timely execution of projects
• Attends industry and pop culture conferences, speaking about Random House Graphic and keeps abreast on changing technology
• May perform other related duties or projects as required
Please apply if you meet the following minimum requirements:
• 5+ years comics design experience
• Strong art and design skills including photography, typesetting, typography, color printing & separation, page layout
• Ability to design/execute book covers
• Strong communication skills
• Excellent computer skills: knowledge of Quark Xpress, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Streamline, and Adobe Photoshop a must.
• Knowledge of printing and production is essential
• Knowledge of full color printing, correction & separation
• Knowledge of 4-color pre-press preparation
• Knowledge of Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point
