The Naples Daily News and The News-Press is looking for a data journalist to join our newsrooms. In this newly created position, we envision the data journalist will help set the standard of how data journalism is most impactful to our audiences — especially on mobile. The data journalist will gather appropriate data sets, analyze data (using industry standard programming tools) and then distill and publish relevant analysis with visualizations to our audience on our multiple publishing platforms.
The data journalist should be able to multitask, balancing short-terms trends with longer term projects. He or she should also be comfortable balancing his or her own work, while also working with others. The ideal candidate will work independently on smaller projects published daily but will also work with other reporters or our regional investigative team on longer-term projects.
Accuracy of work is a must. Strong writing skills are needed, as is the ability to quickly gather information, glean key concepts and present them in easily understood, visually interesting ways.
Candidates most likely to excel in this position will be ones who are curious, take initiative and also enjoy being part of a team. Since this is a new position, the journalist who joins us will help shape this role and help our newsrooms understand how to better use data analysis and visualizations in our publishing.
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree
• Strong writing skills
• Familiarity with AP and SEO styles
• Demonstrated understanding of data analysis; and working knowledge of data visualization tools such as Tableau, Qlik or SQL
• Knowledge of JavaScript, and graphic design software like Adobe
• Familiarity with geocoding, Google maps and UI/UX design concepts
• Prior experience in news media is preferred.
Successful candidates will be required to submit a minimum of five work samples.
