The Associated Press seeks a talented digital storyteller to work as a newsperson at its East Region publishing center in New York.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the U.S. Deputy East News Director for Storytelling, this producer will focus on creating content for AP’s digital customers and platforms. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic, 24/7 operation that works closely with video journalists, photographers, reporters and other news staff across the region and the company to develop engaging content tailored for mobile, websites and other digital platforms. Digital producers create eye-catching social promotion, find and verify important user-generated content and use other digital tools to present stories in unique ways. The producer works with colleagues across the AP to help develop standards and workflows for digital storytelling and train other staff to further their digital skills. This newsperson must have the ability and willingness to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
The successful candidate will:
• Have a demonstrated history of success as a digital storyteller, with a record of creating and delivering compelling work on deadline and producing enterprise that is illuminating and entertaining.
• Work among a team of journalists, reporters and editors to deliver spot news and enterprise coverage for digital customers and consumers that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
• Have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
• Have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms.
• Pursue innovative coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
Qualifications:
This newsperson must have demonstrated excellence in producing content for digital platforms in multiple formats, with a deep record of producing exclusive and distinctive spot news and enterprise stories. Applicants must be able to collaborate and work with reporters, photographers, video journalists, producers and editors to identify opportunities for digital storytelling and unique social promotion. The newsperson must be able to work swiftly and accurately under tight deadlines and also have the ability work and complete longer-term projects. Applicants must have a demonstrated history of working with colleagues in remote locations and the ability to reorder priorities quickly. The successful candidate should have at least three years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
Other qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
• Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
• Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on a complex, challenging story lines.
