The Sr. Director, Product Management of Adaptive Solutions is responsible for the strategy, development and commercial success of Elsevier Education’s suite of adaptive online courses, which center around personalized learning, competency based education and data-driven continuous assessment. The Director’s primary focus will be to transfer the value proposition of traditional print-based products into new online learning solutions that improve outcomes. This role will be located in Philadelphia.
Key Qualifications:
• Proven track record of developing the vision and then autonomously leading development of scalable and commercially successful complex SaaS web products from both ground up, as well re-imagining next generation of existing products.
• Effective blend of Business and Technology expertise, need to be able to effectively represent product in the customer facing environment, while also being able to engage in technical discussions with development teams.
• Demonstrated track record of success in transformational environment.
• Ability to function expertly in a matrixed organization is critical.
• Strong collaborator with demonstrated track record of building alignment between product and subject matter experts across the company.
• Proven track record of translating complex business and educational challenges into effective User Experiences and Product Capabilities
• Proven track record of effectively defining product KPIs and staying disciplined in making data driven product decisions.
• Experience launching and developing content and test (Ex. Quiz/Assessment) based products, ideally in educational environment.
• Strong knowledge of UX best practices and testing methodologies (ex. A/B testing)
• Candidate should demonstrate an ability to learn, employ creative thinking and have a high absorptive capacity (recognizing new information, assimilating it and applying it to new ends).
• Excellent interpersonal skills including social awareness and judgment, persuasion and negotiation, and relationship building, collaboration and team building skills
Main Activities and Responsibilities:
Adaptive Strategy
• Own and articulate product vision and strategic path, adaptive roadmap and backlog, along with standardized product requirements and feature specifications
• Design and implement product innovation strategies to ensure new health care education products are effective and educationally sound to meet rapidly shifting market needs.
• Research, propose, and evaluate new instructional design and innovative learning technologies and options
• Resolve complex business issues and technical challenges associated with converting traditional print-based or digital products from a one-size-fits-all to a personalized approach
• Create and implement consistent instructional design approaches across health care education product lines
• Advocate for effective applications of current and emerging trends in technology and education
• Apply a strategic understanding of how teaching and learning methods and education technology can meet business and strategic objectives
• Lead e-solutions product teams in course redesign and improved content development approaches
• Collaborate with technology team to develop systems to mine and organize data, with reporting capabilities that reflect student and faculty progress towards improved learning outcomes.
• Foster open dialogue and exchange of information with colleagues in other departments, including operations, production, e-solutions, content, sales, support, and marketing for informed decision making
Problem Analysis and Resolution
• Prioritize requested features and new capabilities among competing opportunities, weighing customer needs against business priorities and return on investment
• Evaluate data from customers and recommend ongoing instructional design improvements to leadership and other stakeholders
• Synthesize information in alignment with division, project, or task goals and vision
• Collaborate with e-product teams to propose effective solutions to technical course development and platform delivery issues
• Evaluate and resolve needs through asking effective questions and collecting facts from multiple sources internally and externally, including e-solutions, content, marketing and other experts in instructional design and health care education
Technology Proficiency
• Apply solid understanding of web technologies and experience in instructional design, instructional technology, and distance education to design and execute product strategies
• Apply knowledge of multimedia instructional technologies and emerging technologies, such as podcasting, vodcasting, asynchronous and synchronous technologies, MOOCs, SPOCs, gaming, and virtual worlds
• Understand and apply basic elements of data science and analytics, including simple data mining and statistics techniques
• Leverage familiarity with education and publishing industry standard applications, such as Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, Desire2Learn, Sakai, Adobe Acrobat, Presenter, Captivate, Adobe Connect, Audacity, and/or other related applications
Collaboration and Communication
• Provide leadership perspective by keeping abreast of new technologies, understanding how they affect nursing and other health care education, and advocating effectively for their use
• Understand business imperatives and possess effective communication, organizational, and project management skills
• Develop and conduct training for e-solutions and content teams and subject matter experts as relevant
• Participate in appropriate professional associations and serve as central point of contact in e-solutions for information exchange
• Persuasively articulate the rationale behind adaptive business decisions to key stakeholders
• Effectively communicate and collaborate with others in e-solutions, content, technology, operations, and production
Functional and Technical Competencies:
• Experience in product development and instructional design a plus, preferably in health care education
• Experience with higher education, e-learning, educational technology, and/or learning technology
• Experience leading development of learning management systems a plus.
• Strong experience with technology, including learning management solutions in traditional, blended, and online modalities
• Working knowledge of HTML, EPUB3, XML, and other industry standards for content files/formats a plus.
• Experience working with subject matter experts in health care education, publishers, course or curriculum designers, and media producers a plus
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experiences (and any other requirements):
• BS degree (or equivalent experience) required.
• 5+ years’ experience in educational technology industry.
• Experience working on or supporting technology projects.
• Demonstrated people-oriented and project management skills.
• Adaptability and keen awareness of emerging educational technology.
• Creative and innovative orientation.
