Description
Investigative journalism and innovative storytelling are at the core of our award - winning team based in Washington DC. We have an opening for a motivated and hungry data reporter to join that team producing documentary and investigative stories for broadcast on Newsy cable, OTT platforms and Scripps TV stations. Together, these platforms reach tens of millions of people who are interested in long form, deeply reported stories. We are looking for a reporter who is passionate for investigations and has strong data analysis skills. The ideal candidate has a proven track record using data to tell stories with high impact. We want an idea generator and great collaborator who is able to juggle multiple projects as part of a dynamic team of journalists. Must be a great team player who is comfortable working in a highly collaborative environment producing primarily for video platforms but will also include digital, audio and social media outlets. While experience in all mediums is not required, the desire to learn is a must.
Key activities
• Conceive, develop and execute data driven investigations about abuses of power, corruption and betrayals of trust by public officials and other institutions charged with functioning in the public interest.
• Work in collaboration with others to gather and analyze small/med/large databases, interpret results and identify patterns and discrepancies in support of investigations and deep dive stories.
• Work sources, conduct interviews and do on-the-ground reporting.
• Assist fellow reporters and producers with data brain-storming, acquisition, cleaning, integrity-checking and analysis.
• Bulletproof and validate data work by other journalists on the team.
• Prep data for visual presentation/analysis in motion graphics, animation or online interactives.
• Gather data, including FOIA'ing for it, scraping it, cleaning it and preparing it for publication.
• Work well with external and internal partners and foster best practices in data use.

Knowledge, skills and abilities
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience producing data driven investigative stories with demonstrated results.
• Solid editorial judgement and proven track record in writing and/or producing narrative stories.
• Strong analytical and advanced problem-solving skills
• Superb computer assisted reporting skills to include use of Excel, Access, SPSS, MySQL, web scraping and other database tools
• Familiarity with public databases and investigative search engines
• Knowledge of IRE/NICAR best practices
• Excellent writing skills
• Good command of social media, web search, use of databases and other state of the art news gathering techniques
• Ability and interest to continually learn new tools and techniques for data gathering and analysis
• Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, verbal /written communication, and interpersonal skills
• Must exhibit high standards of accuracy and fairness
• Ability to take initiative, receive constructive feedback, and work with minimal supervision
• Willingness to travel
• Must be an "Excellent" team player who works well in a highly collaborative environment

• Info graphic design skills, and/or general design skills
