The Associated Press seeks a talented journalist to join its bureau in Washington as a news editor. Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Bureau for Newsgathering, this news editor will direct and guide AP's reporting on Congress and the relationship between the legislative branch and the White House, seeking stories that stand out, drive the agenda in Washington and resonate nationwide and around the world. The news editor will also play a significant role in AP’s coverage of the 2018 midterm elections. This news editor will lead a team of reporters based on Capitol Hill and will work closely with editors overseeing coverage of the White House, national politics and national security to craft a report rich in exclusive spot news and distinct, deeply reported enterprise. The successful candidate will have extensive experience managing a team, working in a fast-paced environment, and organizing and allocating resources. This news editor will be comfortable working across media formats to serve AP's wide-ranging set of customers across the globe. The successful candidate will have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends, as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
The successful candidate will:
• lead a team of reporters to deliver spot news and enterprise coverage that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
• have a demonstrated history of reporting on and running a complex story, and have the skills needed to motivate and inspire a team of journalists to achieve success in challenging reporting environments.
• have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
• have a great news sense, with the ability to help reporters communicate stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms.
• pursue innovative coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
Qualifications: This news editor must have demonstrated excellence as a journalist, with a deep record of delivering exclusive, enlightening and distinctive stories on challenging assignments. Applicants must be able to lead, guide, motivate and innovate inside a multi-format newsroom, and be able to coordinate and communicate with AP staffers throughout the company and AP customers worldwide. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with colleagues and peers in teams, and should have at least five years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
Other qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
• Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
• Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on a complex, challenging story lines.
• History of leadership of journalists working in more than one format is a decided plus.
