The Learning Sciences Strategy Director will support the Learning Sciences, Measurement & Analytics department which consists of a multidisciplinary team that supports a holistic approach toward learning and performance in education. The department includes staff with expertise in the learning sciences, education, measurement, and data mining.
This expertise is leveraged in action-oriented research and projects in support of the HMH mission and in consulting with internal and external customers. The insights gained from the efficacy research and data analytics are used in designing and researching products and services maximizing the likelihood of meaningfully impacting the lives of students and teachers.
The team provides solutions by developing innovative approaches that help internal and external customers achieve their teaching, learning, and assessment goals despite practical barriers and limitations.
The Learning Sciences Strategy Director will participate in thought leadership in the design of innovative assessments and learning environments that address the K-12 continuum by working collaboratively across a variety of business areas to establish and execute research- or project-based agendas that reflect the HMH strategic direction and participating in the HMH Learning Sciences Advisory Board.
The Director will define the process for and support the integration of learning sciences and data analytics in the design, development, implementation and improvement of technology rich environments for learning and assessment in a matrixed organization.
The Director will identify and respond to opportunities for internal and external consulting to highlight the meaningfulness of learning sciences in the product development life cycle and the desired outcomes of programs and platforms.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and implement strategic initiatives for integrating the principles of learning sciences into the HMH product development lifecycle and work streams. Provide strategic leadership and direction across HMH in development, implementation, and support of a learning sciences and data culture agenda which integrates the most recent findings from the learning sciences, principled design, digital learning, assessment environments, and data mining in support of HMH’s mission, strategic direction, and products.
Work closely with the Senior Vice President Learning Sciences, Measurement & Analytics to manage the development of the assessment systems for the next generation mathematics, reading, and literacy programs.
Serve as a subject matter expert in activities related to the development of assessments and learning environments, suggest the evidence needed to support validity and efficacy claims, and support the execution of research to support these claims. Work collaboratively with internal and external customers to implement innovative solutions.
Identify and respond to opportunities for internal and external consulting to highlight the meaningfulness of learning sciences with the aim of growing the organization’s capacity for developing and applying approaches to make generalizable inferences about learner cognitive, behavioral and navigation skills to guide product development from both a content and educational technology perspective.
Participate in Learning Sciences Advisory Board and other external communities and boards to advance HMH’s position as a learning company. Attend and present on the HMH strategic initiatives at regional and national conferences.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Required:
• Master’s degree in learning sciences, educational measurement, educational psychology, learning analytics, quantitative psychology or related field required. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired
• 5+ years of experience Learning Sciences or related position
• 3+ years of demonstrated leadership in the development of strategy and/or project management and implementation in a Learning Sciences (or related) position.
• Experience leading and/or managing complex projects.
• Proven ability to lead projects, including cost, resource, and schedule management as well as compliance and reporting.
• Deep knowledge of the principles of the learning sciences, technology rich learning environments, and assessment systems.
• Expertise in consulting with internal and external customers.
• Excellent written, oral, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Successful history communicating technical information and key ideas to lay and scholarly audiences.
• Ability to work in a collaborative team and maintain effective relationships in a matrixed organization.
• Strong attention to detail and a feeling of pride and ownership over the quality of HMH research-based products and student- and teacher-facing applications.
• Proactively seeks opportunities to innovate; embraces continuous improvement efforts.
• Facility with Microsoft products
Preferred:
• Understanding of qualitative and quantitative primary research methods.
• Facility with project management tools/ software
Physical Requirements:
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
• The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
• Must be able to travel up to 40-50% of the time
