Staff Writer - CQ Roll Call

Roll Call is seeking a staff writer who understands Congress.

We are looking for a detail-oriented reporter with the ability to break news, analyze developments in Congress and its related agencies and communicate it clearly through clear writing.
The preferred candidate will be able to dig out daily and enterprise news relating to both chambers of Congress as an institution, particularly related to ethics, security and compliance with workplace and legal requirements affecting members and staff.
Must be comfortable developing deep sourcing in hard-to-crack institutions such as the Ethics committees, Office of Congressional Ethics, Sergeant-at-Arms, Chief Administrative Officer, Office of Compliance and Architect of the Capitol.
An ability to work in a high-paced environment is necessary. Strong writing and editing skill are required.
Accountabilities
In the role you would be expected to:
• Develop and write timely stories within deadlines
• Cultivate and maintain news sources and monitor developments in the news
• Identify photographs and graphics to illustrate stories
• Budget stories and maintain calendar of key dates and events in assigned coverage areas
Experience, skills and professional attributes
To succeed in the role you must have:
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
• Experience with a newspaper or a similar publication
• Multimedia skills
To succeed in the role you will be able to demonstrate:
• Researching, interviewing and writing skills
• Ability to use social media to promote content, develop sources and interview subjects
• Ability to do media appearances to promote work and Roll Call
• Ability to adapt to new technologies
• Ability to work long hours and meet strict deadlines
