Position Summary:
Plans, develops, implements, and directs public relations and community relations activities and programs for LEGOLAND California Resort. Develops and maintains effective partnerships and working relationships with the media, school and community groups, the tour and travel industry, other trades, government entities, and the attractions industry. Directs and oversees the work of the Public Relations staff and other external resources for the execution of public and community relations activities for the Resort. Works closely with the Head of Marketing to align marketing strategies and campaigns with PR campaigns and strategies.
Scope and Responsibilities:
Performs the following functions personally, through assigned staff, or contractual arrangements with external agencies or vendors:
1. Formulates, plans, develops and implements a multi-level publicity and public relations campaign on a local, regional, national and international level. Aligns programs and activities to support all marketing and business objectives through effective program development, coordination, and utilization of internal and external resources. Develops and oversees budgets, programs and timelines.
2. Maintains ongoing relationships with the media and oversees the media relations program including print, television, social and radio. Coordinates efforts and activities with promotions and sponsorships staff and other members of the marketing team. Prepares news releases and feature articles. Arranges interviews between company executives and press, radio and television representatives. Develops Resort spokespersons through integrated media training held annually.
3. Provides advice and assistance to company personnel in writing speeches, preparing letters and drafting articles that are to be made public.
4. Develops and maintains relationships and linkages with the media, community groups, the trade, and government entities to position and promote LEGOLAND California Resort.
5. Creates, develops, implements and coordinates special events and promotional activities--on-site and in the community--to heighten interest in and promote the Park, SEA LIFE aquarium, LEGOLAND Water Park, LEGOLAND Hotel and LEGOLAND Castle Hotel. Coordinates tours and visits of dignitaries, VIPs and celebrity guests.
6. Serves as a spokesperson for the Resort. As a member of the crisis management team, is the key point of contact with the media, community groups, and guest or family members in the event of an accident, violence or other mishap within the Park. Educates personnel in security, safety, and members of management in communication protocols in the event of a crisis to ensure proper response and notification to affected guests, employees, and family members, control negative publicity and minimize exposure. Is responsible for updating and maintaining the PR Crisis Communications Guidebook.
7. Develops the organizational structure, roles and responsibilities for the Public Relations team. Provides program oversight, coordination and management of employees in the Public Relations team including social media. Is responsible for hiring, training, development, performance management, team building and other people management activities.
8. Positive contributor to the Leadership Team in the Marketing Division. As necessary, asks for or provides assistance to other areas of Marketing. Keeps a holistic and exuberant approach to helping others.
Background and Experience:
Requires at least eight years of progressive experience in the public relations field with a theme park, hospitality or closely related industry. Additional years of experience in a public relations/advertising agency are preferred. Requires a track record of success in developing and implementing multi-level media publicity campaigns, with demonstrated ability to utilize the local, regional, national and international media to accomplish key public relations and promotional objectives. Three years of management experience with personnel leadership and program oversight responsibility is preferred.
Requires strong media contacts (local, regional, national and international) with an in-depth understanding of pitching and utilizing different mediums. Requires demonstrated experience and strategic skills in public relations, event promotions, and community relations (schools, government, and trade). Experience as a spokesperson and as a point of contact in high profile issues and crisis situations is required. Ability to set and manage priorities to assigned objectives and schedules. Effectively coordinate and manage internal and external resources. Requires professional writing skills, demonstrated skill in making speeches and presentations and outstanding organizational, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Strong leadership, people management, team building and project management skills required. Computer proficiency with ability to use Microsoft Office Products (Word and Excel), desktop publishing software, powerpoint and familiarity with social media aspects is required. Requires the ability to build positive relationships and linkages with the media, community groups, and the business sector to position and promote LEGOLAND California Resort.
Education:
A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication arts, advertising, business, marketing, or closely related field (or equivalent education and experience) is required. Ten A master’s degree in communication arts, marketing or closely related field is preferred.

Requires a valid driver’s license and passport. Requires travel domestically and internationally.
