Job Summary:
Our Austin game studio, working on the popular Gold Fish Casino and Monopoly Slots games, is looking for a Lead Artist with out-of-this-world talent and experience to help lead the art initiatives on one of our premiere titles!
The Lead Artist reports to the Executive Producer and will provide direction and team leadership for the art department. In this role, you will build and maintain qualitative goals and artistic consistency across the art team, setting high visual standards and defining project style and tone.
The ideal candidate is well-versed with scheduling of art assets, a great communicator and supervisor who has led art teams before through full production cycles, from concept to completion, and is an inspiring mentor/motivator to the art team.
High Level Management Requirements:
• Drives and manages the schedule of art asset creation from concept through implementation/testing
◦ Responsible for all art documentation in Confluence as well as the management of all art tasks/bugs within JIRA
◦ Manage resources to ensure the timely creation of high-quality art assets
◦ Attends all lead reviews and kickoff meetings to ensure the art department has the proper level of understanding when it comes to particular features and what they entail.
• Facilitates communication between departments
◦ The art lead is the point person for the art team and thus leads all communication efforts with production, design, engineering, and product management.
• Responsible for mentoring and evaluating artists on the game team; Resolves conflict and makes sure outstanding contributors are recognized within the studio;
◦ Constantly looking for opportunities to teach and sharpen the skills of the art staff through company training, independent learning, and learning from other team members
◦ Requires excellent communication skills as well as emotional intelligence
◦ Must be able to both give and receive feedback in a constructive, encouraging manner. Understanding of how to tailor communications to the audience while still being effective and encouraging is key
Position Requirements
High Level Art Requirements:
• Strong art foundation including, but not limited to:
◦ Composition, visual hierarchy, color theory, anatomy, animation principles
• Expert-level skills in one or more of the following areas:
◦ Concept art, UI creation, illustration, 3D modeling/texturing, Unity implementation, animation/FX
• Excellent supplementary skills to facilitate art development in one or more of the following areas:
◦ Sketches/Wireframes, composition, iconography, motion graphics, storyboarding/visual targets
Other Requirements:
• Passion for art, game art, and the processes/techniques involved in creating and implementing it is essential.
• Works closely with engineers, designers, and product managers to ensure art is properly implemented; Helps to solve problems where art and other departments meet.
• Works closely with the principal artist to define overall look and feel of the game… ensures other artists are adhering to style conventions and are consistent.
• Sets standards for effective pipelines and processes for the art team and across the organization.
• Demonstrates excellent follow-through and takes initiative to solve game team and interdepartmental challenges.
• Maintains asset libraries with a high level of proficiency and organization.
Skills, experience and educational requirements:
• 7+ years of experience producing high-quality art for mobile games
• Multiple shipped titles covering full production cycles working in a lead capacity
• Experience leading a team of artists from concept to completion
• Bachelor's degree in Art, Graphic Design, or Game Development
Helpful Traits
• Knowledge of asset version control tools such as SVN, GIT, or Perforce
• Experience in social game production
• Experience in SCRUM/Agile production including the use of JIRA and Confluence
• Familiarity with popular Social Casino games
• Personable and accessible not just to artists but all team members within the studio environment
• Team-first attitude… egos are checked at the door.
