JOB DESCRIPTION
The Head of Lighting is responsible for the quality of work produced by the lighting department. They lead the department in craft elevation and training, craft the plan for how the department functions, work with lighting supervisors on shows to ensure the work is of the highest quality, and work with Technology to craft future workflows and tools.
Responsibilities:
• Advise lighting supervisors on the work they’re doing on the show
• Attend and consult in lighting rounds and reviews
• Collaborate with CG Supervisors and the CTO in developing plans for future direction of the lighting department
• Work with production management on casting of shows to ensure opportunities are given for growth
• Determine overall lighting department technology requirements
• Represent the lighting department to the studio at large, and to the industry
• Keep lighting appraised of the information learned about the studio, shows, et al
• Direct the employee review process and any performance management issues
• Direct the hiring of new talent into the department
• Direct all training and craft elevation within the department
• Consult with the CTO on all issues regarding the quality of the final imagery created at Blue Sky Studios
Qualifications:
• Proven experience in leading and collaborating with teams in a production environment
• Strong knowledge of lighting and rendering CGI imagery
• Strong knowledge of image compositing
• Excellent understanding of lighting workflow and processes, both commercial and proprietary, from both an artistic and technical perspective
• Strong artistic eye for creating world-class imagery
• Excellent troubleshooting skills
• Strong knowledge of and strong opinions on where the future of CGI image creation might be headed
• Proven communication skills and the ability to give and take direction
• Proven ability to inspire the department they shepherd and the studio as a whole
• Proven experience in successfully prioritizing tasks in a frenetic environment
• Strong experience in mentoring and craft elevation
