Founded in 1904 and located on New York City’s Museum Mile, the Jewish Museum is dedicated to the enjoyment, understanding, and preservation of the artistic and cultural heritage of the Jewish people. The Museum maintains a unique collection of nearly 30,000 works of art, ceremonial objects, and media reflecting the global Jewish experience over more than 4,000 years. The Museum applies a contemporary lens to its exhibitions, which range from ancient to contemporary art.
-----
The Position:
We are looking for inspired individuals who would like to join the Curatorial Team of The Jewish Museum and develop their knowledge of exhibition realization in a professional, supportive environment. Summer interns will be assigned to assist Curators with research, correspondence, as well as general administration in connection with forthcoming exhibitions, presentations, and related special projects.
The forthcoming exhibition will revisit a period in art history when artists and designers, among them some of the most sophisticated cultural figures in Europe, fled to the United States from Nazi Europe. This show will reconsider the broad impact of this moment of cross-cultural pollination, as émigrés resettled in cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York. This merging of immigrant and American designers and artists used the printed page of a magazine as a stage upon which all the players—color, typography, style, and photography—could participate in the drama of modern design. Central to this show will be an examination of American magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, both of whose art directors, Alexey Brodovitch and Alexander Liberman, respectively, were conversant with photography and design. Brodovitch and Liberman’s openness toward change and their advocacy of a new synthesis of high modernism immediately influenced important photographers such as Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and others, who studied with Brodovitch. By focusing on photographers who partook of this period’s interactive and popular cultural realm, the exhibition will illustrate a central post-war theme: the challenge to the American puritanical separation of high and low art, as photography absorbed graphic, literary, painterly and cinematic attributes.
