BREAKING NEWS REPORTER
The Reno Gazette Journal is looking for a sharp, energetic reporter to cover breaking news and produce in-depth enterprise, watchdog reporting and journalism with impact that readers will want to share and talk about.
Video and photography skills are essential. This position will involve covering stories live on Facebook or other platforms and being adept at digital storytelling. The job may require travel on short notice to help cover big breaking news across the West as part of the USA TODAY Network. The schedule would include nights and weekends, depending on events, and flexibility is a must, as is experience working on tight deadlines.
The tradeoff for accepting these challenges is the opportunity to work in one of Gannett’s top-producing mid-sized newsrooms, known for punching above our weight and valuing investigative and watchdog journalism. There’s a deep pool of experienced editors and reporters to learn from, and the newsroom nurtures a culture of collegial cooperation and professional support.
The job also means living in Reno, Nevada, which is one of the top destinations for outdoor recreation, with Lake Tahoe, dozens of ski resorts, bike trails, rock climbing, hiking, hunting and fishing just minutes away.
The successful candidate will:
• Report and deliver a steady stream of news stories,
via video, writing, Twitter or other methods, of interest to our Nevada
audience, with national context when necessary.
• Be open to using metrics to inform story choices and
shape beat strategies.
• Use social media to reach readers where they spend
their time and attention.
• Provide cogent analysis of trends and issues that
affect the daily lives of readers.
• Use social media to reach out to new and existing
readers and create an identity online that readers connect with.
Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in journalism or related
discipline
• At least three years of reporting experience
• Excellent communication and time management skills
• Attention to detail and unflagging dedication to
accuracy and fairness.
